I see a lot of you guys and girls have installed additional engine parameter gauges. So my questions is in two parts.....

1) Lets see what you have and where you have them

and

2) What actually are the benefits? Does anyone know what the danger levels are when looking at all this additional information?

I guess i'm asking because i feel on edge when i drive the van over longer distances, worrying about what is going on behind me (not that it has ever let me down on a long drive to date mind you). I'd like to think that with some additional information i could spot and stop before things get beyond repair, start to enjoy the drive more.

There are 'danger levels' but most low end automotive gauges aren't even close to accurate enough to use for that purpose.

Most people use them as a guide and if something goes out of what you would normally see on that gauge then there's likely to be a problem..

Never felt the need for extra gauges for 25 years. Only fitted worry gauges (oil pressure, temp and rev counter) to keep an eye on a very non stock engine.

I've got an oil pressure gauge - I don't tend to watch it when I'm driving, but I know what's normal at idle and at motorway speeds, so can tell if there's a problem :)
When I went to France/Spain, there was one occasion where it started flickering, and indicated a low oil level well before the idiot light would have come on :)

I also bought one of Aspro's excellent rev counters, mostly to fill the third dash pod as I never liked it being empty. It's just nice to have :)

You can see them both here:

I ve got not extra gauges , but have a saverbug dip stick .it replaces the standard one , l belive it works by twisting as gets hot and if to hot earthes it self.electrical it piggy backs on the oil sender switch and this cause the oil light on the speedo to flicker , this means just clam down and soild light means stop and now. Ive seem it flicker once once on a very hot day towing a trailer , so it works and takes 5 mins to fit .so no extra gauge just extra info if you need it

These are my worry gauges. There were two installed before I bought him.(Boris)
I did not like that they were electronic ones so got some standard ones.
The housing was made by the previous owner and I quite like it so it stays.

Thanks for the input everyone, certainly food for thought!

I'm intrigued by the saver bug dipstick......i can't find anything on tinterweb though. Any links :p

Any more for any more.....what you got, where you got it, did it warrant the expenditure?

Check out the Gene Berg website I am sure I saw one on there.
Called save my bug oil sender if memory serves.

Got one from a chap on this site until he sucked us all in, and then did a runner with our cash.
No longer on this site so no fear, always ask if unsure, peeps on hear that are legit,
understand you being careful.

Hi.

I got mine direct from the website

http://www.savemybug.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Would recommend, easy fit, piece of mind of potential overheating, oil pressure light and switch still work as normal

Cheers

Alistair

That's the one, and if you like gauges all you have to do is stop at the side of he road, nip around the back, open engine lid and you can see how close the thermocouple is to the contact. No digital frippery here....

I got one of those too - when driving up mountains in 2nd gear in Spain it came on regularly, so we stopped for a bit.

Can't say if the engine would have suffered without it, very possibly - but for £25 and 3 minutes to fit - it gets a big thumbs up from me.....

Thanks for all the input! I think the Saverbug is the one for me at this time. I'm thinking a rev counter might still be a winner, I read that the revs of the engine are more important than the speed you're doing........but I've got to agree with the quote "for £25 and 3 minutes to fit" it also gets thumbs up from me!!

Just to ask a stupid question though (as I can't find an answer on the website) but you still have an oil level reader on the saverbug dipstick? It won't be a case of guessing if the levels are still okay?

My savemybug dipstick doesn't have markings - I just keep the old dipstick in the engine bay and put them side by side.

I can't see any reason not to score the levels on it - I just haven't got around to it

You cant see the oil on it even if you did score it, just keep the original one near-by
