the front hub caps got very hot after an 8 mile trip,is this normal ,and down to the new brakes
this being the first time driven.

cheers, rich

It is not unusual for them to get warm, but if you cannot touch the steel wheels there is definatly something wrong, is one hotter than the other?, could give an indication if one is  . It might be possible that the wheel bearings are too tight and causing a problem too?. Might be worth jacking the van up and checking the wheels turn freely after the brakes have been applied

this was the first time driving any bay not just mine, new brakes but it felt like i didnt
have any :? i will look on sunday

Im sure the bentley manual has some thing about this, from memory its to do with the clearance on the end of the push rod into the master cylinder not having the 1mm clearance causing the brake to be on all the time, I think the causes the comensation port in the master cylinder to be blocked.

Just checked either there might be insufficent push rod clearance or the compensation port in the master cylinder is blocked, there are also a few other things like weak return spring, swolen rubbers in pistons etc.

I agree with currylarger torque for bearing clap is only between 7 foot pounds and 9.5 foot pounds, if too tight your bearings will not last long.

Hope this helps.

Ian

Check the adjustment of the wheel bearings. Haynes at the very least tells you how. Most mechanics and MOT testers have them way to tight. Dependent on whether your have drum or disc brakes check the adjustment if they are drums.

thanks ,i have drums just had them donefront and back not by me by a vw garage, if they havent done somthing right i would love to take it back  after what they charged

drove it today only one side getting hot drivers side and very smelly,
and pulls to that side when braking

Hope the drive back was ok - nice to meet up - you have a cracking van, makes mine look like a shed...... :(

Maybe next time, i will meet you, you can drive mine and compare, i doubt it 2 vans drive the same...... :D

Sounds like badly adjusted pads, does it try to turn the steering wheel when you brake? If yes its your front brake adjustment not rear brakes causing the pulling.

I would take it back to the garage and get them to do a proper job on adjusting the brakes, I assume you had new pads and drums fitted? Let mw know because there are other thing that cause pulling to one side like warped or cracked drums.

Cheers! I leave the interior furnishings to my girlfriend - that's the deal, her department! Those Mexican blankets are nice and cosy at night - the mustard colour leatherette seats are a bit cold without them - it's all OG underneath those throws........Next time, more beer, i only have to stagger 100yds home!

Hey - see if you can post up pics of your rear suspension set up for folk to see - and i'd see about re-instating your front anti roll bar too - perhaps start another thread discussing that lot?

You should have drums being a '69, same set up as mine, pre Aug 71 is wide 5 wheels and drums IIRC

Oh! BTW - did you get any heating on the way back?

Alistair

sounds like the brake cylinder needs to be backed off a click or so, try that 8)

ye lots of heat .and from the brakes booked in for monday

Rich, I think it might be a collapsed rubber brake hose. If you jack up the one wheel, you can back the adjusting stars off with a screwdriver, there is an access hole, you need a flashlight. After backing the shoes off the drum, hit the pedal again and give it a spin by hand. If it's locked again you have a collapsed rubber brake hose...if it's free then you've fixed it! Brake hose takes about 20 minutes to replace.

thanks eric, and every one, i will try this tomorrow after work if it int raining.
sounds easy, :|
