here i am stuck on the m1 on my way to billing with a broken engine waiting for the aa.i can make something to eat and drink at least.and i was meeting someone to pick up some engine parts tomorrow! Even though it was running ok before

what is the recommended distance to put a warning triangle ,may as well get some use from it

oooooooh noooooooo!!

bad luck matey....

Are the AA going to take you to Billing? I'm sure the boys an girls there will help you out.

put the triangle about 30ft behind you btw.......

hope you get it sorted...

that totally sucks dude, but amazing that you can still post on the site, that is great :D

the engine suddenly started rattling then it locked up i guess its thrown a con rod when i turn the crank it locks in certain points.i can get on this site with my nokia n95 and its got sat nav too i could get recovered to billing but would need a rebuilt engine i reckon .just been droped to newport pagnel services have to wait for another truck now

hope you got home safely matey, I know all about waiting for recovery trucks......nightmare....

let us know how you get on with your poor bus....at least once it's at home you can deal with it properly.

presumably that means another winter project coming up....

Cheers, yeah was a bit of waiting around but all back now.I'll strip the engine down soon and see if it's saveable or just get my other engine rebuilt and put it in.This was going to be my last trip this year then I was going to get the body sorted and the engine changed for one I was going to rebuild.

I'm going to take the engine out Monday sometime hopefully and do an autopsy on it! I'll take some pictures of it!

Sorry to hear that fella, SK did mention your plight whilst we were sat in the pub out of the crap wether.....

Getting on the recovery truck, good job it's not lowered or it would be scraping the floor going on!

I got round to taking the engine out this afternoon and partly stripped it to find the cause of the breakdown.

Engine before removal

Engine out on the floor

Started by removing the exhaust and heat exchangers, fan belt then checked fan for damage, this was ok.Removed some tinware and decide on what to do next.

I decide to remove the head on the left hand side, due to number three cylinder is usually the first to go.

Head off which took a bit of persuasion getting it off those rusty studs! Can you guess whats wrong yet?

These are all the broken bits that need changing

Not too bad really. But I will sort out a few other jobs whilst it's off too.I actually had arranged to pick up a complete set of barrells and pistons and heads from someone whilst I was at Billing to rebuild a Beetle engine which is in my garage. But I never made it.Theoretically I could of got recovered to billing and fixed it there.Had I known it was only a valve broken up,I thought it was more serious though.

I've been busy re building my camper engine.Firstly I checked the beetle block I had was good,it has a good case crank and cam etc with correct amount of end float. So cleaned that up and painted it with black engine enamel.I recommend getting an engine stand, they are useful to have.

Next up was to sort out ordering some new stainless steel exhaust valves, gasket set, rear main seal and o-ring etc from cool air on tuesday afternoon, which came wednesday morning, well done cool air! And I won a progressive webber carb kit on ebay which came this morning.I picked up a set of barrels/pistons/rods and heads last weekend.

So today I started cleaning up all the bits, grinding all the valves in measuring everything etc, painting the heads in VHT red, grinding the barrels to the heads etc.

Checking to make sure the pistons and barrels where the right size

Grinding the valves in.I like doing it this way, much quicker :D
IMG_1193.jpg

Fit the pistons and barrels, not forgetting the heat shield.

Then fit and torque the heads and install rockers and set valve clearances.

I forgot to mention, when I stripped the old engine I found that two cylinders had 85.45 size barrels/pistons and two had 85.95 barrels /pistons.And they where all fitted upside down  No wonder it never sounded that well balanced and had a vibration at higher revs.I had always planned to rebuild the engine, but had to do it sooner as it was forced on me.
