Errm,
My 71 on a twin port has been running great for the last 6 months
this weekend I covered about 150 miles mainly on the m-way at 55-60mph
yesterday I noticed driving around town that up steep hills in 2nd there was a slight
burning almost electrical?? smell.
Driving up a graduall hill on a dual carraigeway/m-way at 50 the smell doesnt appear.

Any ideas.... :?

Cheers
Spence

Have a look under te engine could be some oil dropping on heat exchangers? Or could be clutch smell?

Clutch slipping when its pulling the van up hill or accelerating i'd say.

Yeah but thats a very distinctive smell....

can you describe the smell?

oil? electrical...i.e. burning insulation? etc....

It doesnt smell like a clutch to be honest...I taught perople to drive before and remember this stink.
almost smells a bit electrical....I stopped immediately and took a look under the dash and out the back and took a good sniff and visually looked for dodgy wires but nothing!

any clues?

When u had a sniff under the dash could u smell it there? If not try smelling near the engine see if you can track it down

Hi!

Is the engine getting too hot? You should be able to hold the dipstick without it being way to hot to hold. You may have timing issues?, if the timing is out it will run too hot, or airflow problems? Perhaps check the big cooling fan, it may have a rag sucked into it, reducing the airflow, and with the engine under load will cause it to run too hot.

Check the oil, could be running low, being air cooled, the engine relies on oil as well for the cooling, and running below min might not help? Have a look at the engine for oil leaks as mentioned, rocker covers and pushrod tubes always a good place for leaks.

Perhaps the engine is running too lean? This will make it run hotter?

Best to go up a hill slow with plenty of revs, then lug it up in a higher gear with low revs!

Good luck!

Alistair

Thanks for all you replies
Bizarrely the smell has gone
Maybe it was my Jack Russell "Kermit" having a bit of Vertigo around the arsehole
Cheers!
