so we just drove all the way to norway to start a 3 week tour with a thousand km under the belt in a day and a half we had no troubles at all, didnt push it too much, 55 mph all the way. so we get to norway and the 1st hill we hit where i have to drop down to 3rd i notice a burning oil smell. 1st safe place to do so i pull over i notice the oils leak shown in the pics. its not major in terms of oil loss, but its welling up below the fan belt and droppiing onto the exhaust. i can drive on the flat at 60 - 70 if needed and theres no smell of oil burning, if i get a good run at a hill and can keep her in 4th theres still no smell of burning oil, its only when i have to drop down to third (same incline) that i smell it.
i didnt have the time to service it myself before i left, so i paid a bus specialist to do it just 2 weeks before and im wondering if they screwed up somehow and if so where? weve driven at least 5 thousand before with no problems at all, and nothings changed except the service, does anyone have any ideas where it could be from, or if 3rd gear could be anything to do with it (cant think waht myself). and suggestions how to fix it quick while on a campsite?

ps norway is cool as so far apart from the oil leak. should be oneveryones to do list!!

I'm no expert mate but I've looked at an exploded view of a type 4 and there are a number of oil seals in that area (relief valve/cooler/filter/pump) -
can't fathom why only in third though.
Best of luck with local help, our thoughts are with you......chin up :?

Agreed the only leaking in third is a bit weird - unless the engine is over filled with oil and its when the road gets steeper the oil tips up the back of the engine..

hI,

Make sure that your oil filler is located in place correctly. On the type 4 engine the plastic filler part is pushed over the metal neck, it is secured in place with a large wire clip. It could not be located properly and if you have some steep hills the oil could be coming out from here and pooling in front of the fan. Make sure that you do not have too much oil in the motor.

If its not this it could be coming from the dipstick rubber boot. Locate it as either of these and you should be fine.

These are quite common problems and can look a lot worse than it is!!

Good luck.

If you have any more technical problems and need help, just post a message on the Norwegian aircooled forum VWNorge.no and we will help you out.

And if you are in Norway by next wekend, you should not miss the SCC - Norway's largest aircooled VW meet. More info here http://www.sccevent.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
