Hey Guys,

1600sp with a single solex..
Now always stalls, Ive had the carb off for a clean up with brake cleaner and an air compresser, then cleaned all the plugs up and the dissy cap/rotor arm.

It was still stalling. I then read a good thread on here about setting up the auto choke. So I followed it and moved the choke anticlockwise almost max, way passed the last mark on the housing, it started on the key okay and the mechanical choke looked like it was where it was supposed to be but it drove like crap, spluttering, stalling etc.. So I figured it was over-fueling and then I read that you shouldnt move it passed the last mark on the carb housing.

I got up early before work to adjust the carb back to one of the marks on the housing. It fired up fine but within 20 - 30 seconds it was stalling again...........

Any ideas??????????????????

What with the beam that needs replacing I am not liking my bay much right now :|

stick with it. its a process of elimination, that resource clasrkson has linked should give you the information you need.

It might be useful to buy a refurb kit for the solex costs less than £10, it will have a new float needle valve, pump diaphram and gaskets for the carb. Set it up and check the mixture and air bypass screws are in the correct position etc, at least you would be able to eliminate the carb from the equation.

Arr thanks Clarkson, very good.. I need to start at the begining I think.. Just wondering if it was a leaky cylender or something..

I had the same issue, I found I have air leaking in the throttle shaft, I ended up getting a new carb as I needed it working fast.

Ill try a few more things with the carb, if its still fooling around then im taking the whole engine out as I want something good in there anyway and need to get to the fuel tank to do sender etc etc..

Could be a simple as grit in the idle jet - it will drive fine but die when you take your foot away.

Hmm i would have hoped that the brake cleaner and air compressor got any grit out, but youre right it really needs to be taken apart and left in a tub of cleaner..

No.25 - take it out and blow through it, whenever mine clogged up I could see the grit in it.

It was the jet?

Do I win a prize?

I was saying thanks for the line drawing, but I tried cleaning the jet which was indeed dirty BUT it still stalls.......................................... :x

No prize just yet sorry :)

Its alright  I apprechiate you giving another suggestion.. Keep them coming! :)

your still getting dirt in the carb I thought it had been cleaned out?

are you running a fuel filter?

what is the dirt like?

have you checked the fuel pump diaphragms not disintergrating?

See below..

No there isnt one on there, this engine (going on what I have found from old posts on here by the PO) is made up of old parts!! Bits are missing and wires are hanging off

Around the main air intake its black like an oil stain, in that needle Joval pointed out it was black gunk in a few of the jets..

No, i think I either need to get an OK second hand carb that I know runs or get one of the £10 rebuild kits Johnny said about.. I might just take the carb apart as I cant really break it, its already broke

carb rebuild is simple, it was one of the first things i ever did, the kits come with a good diagram.

Roger, ill do that then.. Might as well while i am waiting for my weedeater / discs to be ready to be built up and installed...

Where would you recommend getting a kit from?

cheaply... GSF, they always have them in stock. It will come with several gaskets to fit 31pict tp 34 but will have the right one in the pack. The float needle valve will look different as its an updated design, it will also fit your solex no problems.
