Have managed to convinvce the bank manager (wife) that a new carb would help with the fuel economy / increase power on our stock bay 1600 TP.
Have been told that a progressive carb is a step up from a stock 34pict3 and next would be a twin carb set up.
i personally would like to go twin carb route as once everything is in place theres not much more needed for further progression ,have also been told that anything more than a 36 on a stock engine is overkill, is this true?
So what im asking is, would you go Progressive or Twin and with what kit?
Can anyone recommend anything i should look at / avoid?
Bets place to buy from?

Twins are the answer if you have the cash, but expensive   .
If you want a progressive:-

I know this was on his van up until two weeks ago working well and I believe it is about 18 months old, reason for the change was a set of 36 drla's ready for an engine up grade later this year.

Apart from the obvious what would be the benefits of twins over progressive?
Thinking more along the lines of MPG as my bay is now going to be my daily.
Have a budget of around £300 to play with (depending on when i sell my other car) but if nt much difference then dont see why a progressive couldn't work for me

Not sure about the diference in mpg, may be worth contacting someone like arroan on here over that, but it will obviously depend on how heavet your right foot

A progressive carb is an absolute C@#T to set up properly plus you still have the problem of the fuel dropping out of suspension, hence the centremounts are jetted richer... Whats the betting you'll throw it across the garage before the days out.....
A well balanced twin, single or double barrel, set up should give you better mpg and power. You'll need to source a good quality linkage and manifolds.

So personally stock / ish (sort out a good manifold with open heater pipe) refurbed solex or a decent twin set up

So best avoiding a Progressive then
Will have to have a look at a twin set up.

Saw this on JK site http://shop.justkampers.com/product_info.php/cPath/1_23_150/products_id/10382
Or these on Machine 7
http://www.machine7.com/section.php?xSec=1474

Are any of these any good?
Is it worth trying for used items?

Have had a look on Ebay and there appear to be a couple of twin 40's but will any twin carbs fit or is there a certain model / make that i should be looking for?
Have heard alfa carbs fit, am i right?

Another thing i've just thought of (i'll stop thinking one day) if i decide to go twin cars how do i fit a servo take off point to the manifolds?
Will twin carbs run from my stock dizzy (twin advance/retard can) or would i be better fitting a 009?
My head hurts and i'm only asking questions! :|

alpha's fit wnat you want are drla's, if your on ebay I bought mine form there from a guy in spain, carb's ok but they were advertised attached to the manifolds which I assumed would come with them but did not, so you need to allow about £160 for manifolds, filters, linkages etc and poss blanking plates for the choke control also.
Be aware also it is easier to pull the motor oou to fit them as you can not get to the back nuts on the manifolds

If you've got an otherwise stock 1584cc, then it's not worth going for anything too big on your carbs. If you want to make the most of big carbs, then an improved camshaft would be required (bottom end rebuild). I've got the progressive Weber kit from JK and an Engle 100 cam in my 1641 and it runs well.

Whatever you go for, get it setup and jetted correctly for your engine. Good carburation is rarely an off the shelf marriage-made-in-heaven.

Thanks for all the info,
the main reason i'm thinking of going twin carb is that i have just drove the bay about 170 miles to the inlaws, anyway we stoppped half way down for a toilet break and the van was a pig to restart after being stopped for about 15 mins presume this is due to fuel vapourising because of a centre mounted carb hence going twin carb.
Does this sound about right or am i barking up the wrong tree? Would twin set up get around this problem?

Froggy you say it was a bitch to start was it not the starter struggling? putting a drain on the battery and thus the ignition coil being a little weak? i.e. a hot start issue.....

try checking/replacing all the connectors to the ignition switch and back and to make it easier fit a hot start relay?

or was it deffinately a fueling problem?

as after a 15 min break the manifold should still be warm enough to ease the problem of the fuel falling out of suspension....

If thats all the problem is then de-coke the heater tube and refurb the carb for a few quid.....

and check your gaiters for wear on the manifold

When i tired to restart the van the engine would turn over but not fire and when it did fire there was a cloud of smoke, this is what makes me think it is a fuelling problem but if anyone has a wiring diagram and any info on hot start relays then its definately something i will look into.
How would i go about de-coking the heater pipes?

Caustic soda and pipe/bottle cleaning brush.....

Is this the only occurrance or is it the first time its been for a good run for a while

This is the 1st real run out it has had in 14 years.
Due to other things that need doing im edging towards a progressive 32/36 weber.
Have seen a few on ebay going realtively cheap (although this is just the carb and i would need manifolds etc)but what is the model i need?
The 1 im watching is a 32/36DFAV is this the correct type?
What exhaust would you match a proggressive with? 4in1 header with back box? Would stock exhaust be to restrictive?

Would you say that in all honesty until i can afford to go twin then the best bet is to stay with my 34pict3? or is there another single carb i can look at?
What about exhausts what should i look for? Need 1 that i can use with Heat exchangers (ideally)
Are there any solex twin carb kits available?

There are solex twin carb kits and you just missed a pair on ebay

Theres so many exhausts out there to comment on look at your budget the clearance you have etc... and work from there....

and yes personally stick with the refurbed stock and get some baby dels when you got the cash / can find a pair...
