Have used both of them a few years ago.

Rug Doctor was OK, HSS was similar. The big problem was the condition & maintenence, The Rug Doctor one went back as it was flooding, The HSS one had seen better days, but functioned. Both of them did the job, but neither were without hassle due to the hire centre's not checking them properly before they left.

Hey Matt,, give the rug doctor a good vote, but not used the other one. Nice and simple to use (backwards ?) and quite controllable to give a decent result.

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,,,If you are cleaning spew,   best of luck mate

Just a tip though chaps from years of using these things.what they don't tell you is this.....when the dirty soapy water is sucked up, your carpet looks great..... But, there is always a soapy residue left behind when it dries.
What is the purpose of soap??? Holds onto dirt!! therefore, once you've used one of these machines, you may find it needs cleaning more often as the residual soap will hold onto the grime. After all, you wouldn't wash your clothes or hands without rinsing.

A good idea is to run over the area with clean plain water a few times, it helps a little but once that soap is in there, its a pig to get out!

Hope that helps. No 'dirty rug' jokes Ozzie!!!

I asked my girlfriend once what do you do if you spill carpet cleaner? She rolled her eyes and called me an idiot :-(

Just hired a rug doctor yesterday and I thought it was realy good although I experianced what you said but when i ran out of cleaner just used very hot water and it worked just as well without cleaning fluid. Dogs and white carpet dont mix!
