Hey up.

Word of caution if anyone has a Clarke ccd240 24v cordless drill.

So tonight i am converting early to late bay steering box. I am working under the van. I have just welded up the two holes and finished cleaning up the welds. I grab my clarke 24v cordless and drill the new holes to 10mm. Then changed the bit to 13mm and put it to one side. I am checking the holes with my cardboard template and smell this aweful smell. Burning electrical components. I look around the see smoke pouring out the drill vents. I go to grab it the plastic on the handle is soft and very very hot. drag it somewhere safe away from the van. I grabbed a cloth and disconnected the battery and it stopped.

The drill was just standing there no intervention and it just started burning. i usually store it in the carry case, with the battery in. Glad it didnt start burning while packed in the garage.

Obviously next steps are to make contact with Clarke and show them the pics and video Ill let you know what they say.

thats all i have to say about that.

Initial contact made. They are not interested as its 16 months old. I think this is a safety issue not an end of life issue.

Didn't seem to understand that I was reporting it case it injures someone.

That sounds really bad!!

I think any batteries are potentially dangerous. Slightly different line, but a few years ago we had a new leather sofa and when I came downstairs next morning the remote for the telly was leaking battery acid over the seat! Never had that happen before-ever.
Fortunately no real damage done but if it had been left much longer...

Use a corded drill instead. ;) :)

That's well dangerous.

Only 16 months? I would expect a cordless drill to last way longer than that. I've got a basic Bosch and B&D cordless drills which are over 5 years old & still going strong.

You should send that to Which? magazine.

I'm pretty sure u.k. consumer law gives you up to 5 yrs, they either have to repair or replace it. Remember reading about a guy who bought a telly from Tesco and it lasted 18 months. He stuck his guns and eventually got it sorted , apparently most retailers conveniently forget that one and try the 1 yr warranty trick.
