hey all,

this may help someone / it may not but thought a little post is needed.

I have spent the day trying to get better tunes in the van cheaply untill
I start doing leisure batteries and amps etc etc later.

I do not want to cut the original westy interior as for the last 40 years
its survived with barely a pinhole BUT have finally found out there is
just no where to mount speakers in the rear without doing so
I will find somewhere when i do the proper job later in the year.

l do not have any speakers in the kick panels or door panel speakers
just an old one flung up above the stereo (not even tied down lol)
so as you can imagine sounded terrible :msn4:

SO, off to halfords I went with the sole intention of just trying to do something
with the centre dash speaker placement and do the kick panels later.

Well as you dont need a speaker cover (being under the dash) Halfrauds sell
a pair of Alpine SXE1325S coax 2 way that have no speaker mesh cover
(were £54.99 down to £26.99) and in the shop sounded v v good.

I was amazed at how much room there was behind the stereo and upto the
top of the dash. Basically I mounted them in some MDF, built up the
sides so theres a 1cm gap to the top of the dash (ie, so the speakers are not
hitting the dash) then built a support down to the top of the ashtray with a stereo hole cutout.

I will post some pics when I get a moment but all i can say is its a job I am sooo
glad i did. Sounds great (not the albert hall obviously) but its real simple to do
and is not hard my any means, just time consuming if like me you are not a carpenter.

If you only have kick panel speakers and was thinking of doing this, DO IT.
Cant wait to do my kick panels now :D
BTW,a small tip is to take the glovebox out, makes life alot easier.

cheers
og

This is job I'm planning to do soon, going the opposite way than you though I have the speakers/amp/ipod connections...ect but now just want a simple radio.

The sound system in my bus is awesome! Was cheap too  Grazy give me some hi-fi speakers he found in the bowls of his garage so I used the mid's and tweeters from that. Brought a pair of Fli (vibe) 6x9's which are mounted in the panel below the rock 'n' roll bed and at the same time got a top notch Kenwood I-pod head unit. All in all about £160

Still have a Sony 1200w sub and an amp to go in but that will be done at a later date.

heres some pics for ya in case anyone wants an idea of what lurks behind
