Just though I would ask peeps opinions on changing the original wide 5 brakes to later 112 dics.

There is nothing wrong with the current brakes but as I don't have stock wheels on it is a pain to keep adjusting the brakes. I have bought a set of late brakes only to find out these are the earlier 70-72 type so this are back up for sale and I have now since sourced the correct 73> set up.

My reasons for the change are less maintainence and with a servo improved stopping (but mainly the maintainance)

Folks down the club say don't do it as the reason EB's are desired is the lights and brakes -I kinda agree but would rather fit all new components and have a fit and forget solution that essentially uses more modern technology.

What are your thoughts -I'll be running a set of these alloys so actually think knowone will even notice

IMHO 205 steel wheels when blasted and painted with some decent hub caps look the nuts, especially if your get a set of pre 64 split screen 15" wheels for that extra help with the gear ratio when fitting smaller tyres.

The offset on the originals is as it should be.

Say no more 8)

If you go to discs on the front,do you have to fit the brake compensator valve that disc brake vans have ?
Is it a different master cylinder/internal bore,piston size :?

Yep, was thinking this as well. A friend has a late bay I can take measurements from as to position and angle but Ido know of peeps (whether rightly or wrongly) not using this and sometimes even using the original EB MC

The offset of the above wheels is approx ET40 +/- 1mm and they are 6J so are about as good as alloys get for a bay.

I have actually had my original steels blasted and primed ready for re-paint and then there are the NSU's, teledials etc.......Have now decided to sort the brakes out and not worry about the alloys -hence the choice to run with the Ronals above.

That said, would the change de-value the van loads as this is what I keep being told :(

possibly, not having 205pcd would put me off a prospective purchase - i'd be factoring in cost of changing back to a csp disk kit, unless i was planning on running Porsche pattern etc...

Having said that i had 3 different brake set ups on busses...
drums all round - rubbish.
wide 5 disc kit (box wagen - wilwood calipers, porsche vented discs) - much better but still need a strong leg.
Stock servo'd disc brakes on a 71 (all new components, calipers, discs the lot) - Unbelievable, miles better than either of the other two and easily as good as any modern car i've had.

I've got 112 pcd and 205 adaptors on the front.

Wouldn't care about the devaluing bit, I was more interested in stopping and less maintenance with discs.

I changed more because you need to be able to stop as quick as the car in front of you, the drums soon fade and need lots of adjustment, so I was concerned I was going to run in the back of someone.

If I ever sell my van I can always swap back to drums or give the buyer the drums, if they are made enough to think it worth more with poor drums brakes all round

I did mine for the same reasons. The brakes were so much better after. I ran Porsche wheels which detracts from what I had done.

They are low maintenance & easy to work on, potential buyers can see the benefits & only the die hard would be put off. Once they drove both, they would change their mind too. Don't worry about the resale value, there are too many other factors that will effect it more.

I am not sure about the Granada rims, I don't think they will suit the van.

I don't see the problem, you could hang on to all the early stuff so it could be put back sometime, love the wheel choice, very different. (p.s. I used to have a granada ghia coupe, till it caught fire  )

Well, van passed another MOT and chap commented on how good the brakes were. Thing is I want better brakes so it stops like a modern car

Am thinking of getting a servo as well

Matt, give us a call ref brakes as we now have a few options available, and you`d be able to run standard 205 and 112 if you ever wanted to change, and using vented discs and modern calipers.

futbus

im planning on doing this, ive got the full braking system from a 79,i was just going to use adapters theres some on ebay for about £70,im going back to splitty rims aswell so the extra 15mm each side shouldent be a prob

This is exatly the dilema I have. Only problem is I got as far as spending £750 on some 17" fuch before realising its considered a big no no.

Everyone who seems to know a thing or two thinks I'm mad to even consider taking of the 5x205 but I still cant decide

who said it's a big no no

so what do you do if you like the look of fuchs - but can't afford real ones?

if you can afford real ones how do you fit them - oh yeah adapters

so you still end up with a 205pcd with non vw std wheels......

I'd be inclined to go 112 get repro's and use geniune vw parts - no spacer/adapters....if you keep all the 205 stuff then if you have a 'smooth steel moment' a day and it can be back to drums all round and 205..........

remember it's your bus and it only really becomes marginally questionable on a perfect almost new fresh NOS type van - even the who cares these old buses are for using........6 yrs of umming and arghhing has taught me that much!!

My bus had this conversion done in the States.
My original plan was to get them changed back to 205 pcd asap but i'm kind of used to it now.

brakes are better too...changed lizard to small five discs up front and even changed the rear to match even though he`s a 70...the brakes are better trust me. Still i am a wide five fanatic on my own bus and just love beauty rings...check it out

Scott, that final pic is one of my favourite dub pics of all time and if I had anything that original I would respect it and leave it alone but in the case of my bus, getting it on the road, whatever the stud pattern, will be an improvement to how I found it.
