Checking shocks ..

.. also, how should the shocks feel if they are ok? they look pretty old but are not leaking .. i can collapse them by hand and then pull them back to length reasonably easily, but obviously quite slowly as the oil transfers .. does that sound about right?

.. oh and if i put adjusters on the beam will they need to be shorter anyway?

If they're slow to compress and extend, with no feeling of bubbling they should be fine.
If they're like bicycle pumps bin them.
