Cheryl’s first bus

So a little about the bus. It’s a 72 import, from Germany to USA Texas then imported to the UK 11 years ago. It’s LHD has original 72 westfalia interior, original paint on the exterior along with original panels, it’s had nothing welded, and is truley solid. It’s a 1700cc running with twin Webber carbs that’s need setting up properly, lowered 1 spline on the rear and lowered a little on the front on the adjustable beam.

ext up was to change the fuel lines, replace the house pipe used as protection in the firewall with a grommet, located the fuel filter under the bus rather than inside the engine bay, not ideal attached to starter motor but will rectify later

Ended up draining all the fuel out of the tank to change the hose. Annoying

Also had a little leak from the carb. My friend rectified this for me

After all of the previous, it isn’t running correctly Only one side of the engine works on idle, currently going through fault finding over the next few days so will report back once we figure out what it is

Nice score on the engine lid. I hope you’re going to move the fuel filter before driving it as that position looks very precarious. It’s near a lot of electricity, and just above the axle! Above gearbox is the best place.
Also what make is your fuel regulator as it looks like a fairly cheap one that I’ve seen fail on YouTube before.
The inside of your van looks very cosy though.

Hi.

I will move it at some point, the bottom of my tank has the wrong fitting, I think it’s supposed to have a 90 degree angle fitting, I just needed to get it running and tuned, I will try and find a proper bracket for it to mount properly

I’m going to get a malpassi regulator once the van is up and running properly, sorting the engine out is top of my list for now, just want to drive it lol

Make sure you support the hand brake handle whilst drifting out the handle pin. Use a piece of wood underneath cut to the right length.

This sounds like you may not have the float level set nicely, possibly due for new needles and seats too. This is fairly common on Webber 34s carbs and seems to get worse as the new stuff don’t last very long. Any smells of fuel in the noisey cupboard? Any chance your oil level may have increased slightly?

Put an electric fuel pump in which gives instant fuel when ignition is on. (not dependent on engine turning over to give fuel to carb) Eliminates possible fuel leaks into sump too. Have you changed the flexible fuel breather connections behind the firewall? Engine needs to be out for this so the tank breather connections are accessible. This is an important thing to do as this is an extreme fire risk especially when the tank is full which expands in hot weather. The pipes and connections are hidden away and probably have not been replaced ever. These will be brittle with the E fuel. Look in the side air inlets and you will see the expansion vessels which look like little bottles. The pump is Facet made in US. Use ethanol fuel inhibitor to protect tank etc. Drawings show where flexible connections are. Also consider a fire suppressant system. What's your van worth to you? £200 might seem a lot but it is protecting thousands of pounds worth of your hard earned money ??
