Strange or maybe not but I want to change back to wide 5's. Having just replaced the rear wheel cylinders I have established that I definitely have the older type of style wheel cylinders. Shoe fits inside the rubber boot on the cylinder etc. parts listed start 68!

Does this mean that if I want to change to Wide 5's I buy need brake drums and hubs etc. and elements of my current set up will remain unchanged...

Up front I have narrow 5 later discs, want to keep these, what’s peoples views and experiences of using spacers? Appreciate your assistance as I want to buy some new wheels to finish of my van

This may help visualise older cylinder back plate?
Can I fit wide 5 drum hub onto this ?

I think you will need to change everything from the spindle out. The 112 set up has the drum going over the hub, whereas the 205 drum is also the hub nut.

So the only quick solution is an adaptor.

I have 205 wheels on mine and 205 rear brakes, just changed to 112 front discs and 205 adaptors, havent had any problems in 2000 miles.

Its not an easy conversion, you will deffinatly need an earlier spindle, as they are longer, you will aslo need new backing plates and a whole lot more, IMHO its a step backwards that will cause you a lot of greif, your best option is to get adaptors if you want to go wide 5, or possibly re drilled hubs.

i made similiar equires abit a go. some guy on here put me onto creative engineering wide 5 hubs for small five shafts etc. the bumf on the website still metions you have to use early internals; cylinder, shoes etc. it wasn't clear exactly what the deal is. might be worth checking out? they're about 80 odd notes a piece though.

MMMMMmmm not straight forward then, was thinking of changing the backs and using adapters up front. Because the cylinders were early when I replaced them not the 71 > type I kindda hoped alot of the other stuff would be ok and I could whip of the nut hub and then get on with the w 5 set up.....

Also note that the wide 5 stuff doesn't see as commonly available...

Also nervous about using adaptrs or redrilling hubs doesn't this weaken the components etc. and possible widen the track which will mean rubbing on the arches etc.

yeah, my vans small 5, but i like the early wheels and domey hubcaps. probably working toward a narrowed beam up front, so additional width with adapters is not an issue. my rear is tight. have to jack the doglegged springplate down and just get the wheel tyre in. no chance with wheel adapters too. so looked into what you're thinking. these hubs from creative seem to be the answer, especially if money isn't really an issue?

Well took a look at the site here is the blurb from the web site and picture...........

205 PCD for Bay Hubs
Price: £188.00

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The world supply of 68-89 hubs has all but dried up and any hubs that do turn up are high bucks and often poor condition. Later 70-80 hubs are easier to find and at the moment, a lot less expensive. The problem is your 205 pcd early wheels will not bolt on. Until now. We can now offer rear drums that will fit your 70-80 hubs but are the large 205 pcd bolt pattern. We supply you with a pair of new drums, pair of seal spacers & fitting instructions. You will be able to use the 70-80 hub unit complete with all standard bearings and seals, the 70-80 rear backing plate. You must use 64-67 Split screen, or 68-69 Bay window slave cylinders, brake shoes and handbrake levers etc.

Has anyone fitted this and what exactly are you getting for your doe, is it a noraml style wide 5 drum and a spacer?
Has anyone fitted this? Made any themselves themselves?

It works with late bay parts so if you bin your drums and splined rotors and bolt on the New CE drums for exacty that -wide 5, no spacers, no hassle

Simples :msn4:

I have a bus 68 [hopefully here?] in a couple of weeks - which is 205 and I want to run fuch reps on it which are narrow 5 - so maybe up for a swap of rear components -

unless mine [or yours are broked?]

I also asked but no one posted back - which is odd for here tbh - about doing your conversion in reverse and what was needed off a late van, ie one that is being scrapped in terms of rear hub parts and even if it could be done? so I am no further forward - like you.

D

sod it i'll start a thread.........

Looked into it all further at Vanfest and got scared off by adapters gob smacked by the price to change back to Wide 5 from T2D etc so for now anyway am going at it with the exisitng set up and gonna fit on some 112 alloys. Good luck with yours dubuduz
