I went thru my numbers the other evening using the 'specications guide' and it took me nie on 2 hours lol, altho if i read the book before hand this would have helped

I like the fact it was destined for the USA and the owner picked it up from the factory presumably to tour Europe, how many others have UT as their destination code?

Took me a while the first time, I got the book at Volksworld last year in April and have deciphered 20+ plates now, gets easier and quicker each time

Speedman what book are you using? I just use a few internet sources they differ in some areas especially on the bundled codes which makes it awkward trying to tie exact options down....

I use 'VW Transporter & Microbus Specifications 1967-1979' by Vincent Molenaar & Alexander Prinz

Thanks for that you are a star.

I cracked mine a little while ago, but came accross something that was a little confusing.

The numbers are as follows:
30 8
396 191 543 737
11
EN 2240 474733 8013782

This decodes as:

191 With outer and center underfloor plates (belly pans) -
396 Specifications for Great Britain
Collection of M-codes: M 008/020/061/196
008 Without battery -
020 Speedometer and odometer in Miles
061 Type labelling of seat mounting and identification plate for England and Ireland
196 Asymetrical headlights, RHD (depending on type) -
543 Without seats in passenger compartment (3-seater) -
737 Without portable chair but with guiding rails on floor (only applicable to model type 27 - Ambulance)

Now I checked in a number of places and all say the same thing that the code 737 is for ambulance models but mine has no ambulance rails anywhere, nor any sign that there were any. The van is a Devon Caravette and has been from new. Is it possible that being an early early bay they may have used a split code still? If anyone has the answer I'd really appreciate it.
