Hi
My nice new remtec engine seems to have developed some crankcase pressure, I've contacted them regarding getting it checked but wondering if someone could shed some light in the mean time.

Its a 1600 with twin 34s, It has a breather hose from the oil filler to the right hand carb inlet/air filter and then another pipe drops straight through down past the heads and vents to air. When revved a decent amount of fumes seem to come from this down pipe and once turned off it drips quite a bit of oil.

My other clue is that when I changed the oil after 3500 miles (first change at 500) the old oil was extremely metallic looking.

It didn't do this for the first 3000 or so miles. Am I a complete numpty or is the engine likely to have a damaged ring (ooer).

cheers for any help.

Hi

regarding the above mentioned problem, anyone know a good vw garage in the west sheffield, peaks or chesterfield area?

cheers

i had this problem too, my solution was by getting a bugpack breather box kit. Vented each cylinder head and then the 3rd pipe went to the oil filler. Solved my crankcase pressure woes. I don't know why but fitting dual carbs to a vw engine even standard will cause this :?

A problem here is that the words emboldened above are pretty subjective terms. What may be a "decent amount" to you may be perfectly normal to me. And I'm not knocking you or saying that you don't have reason to be concerned, it's just that it's hard to know if this is in line or out of line with what one might expect.

Do I understand this part correctly?............... Your oil at the 3500 mile change was as or more metallic looking than at 500 miles? At your 500 mile changeout you should probably see some metallic glint in the oil (and this assumes that the oil was changed out after the initial run-in). While it wouldn't be completely out of line to see some metallic glint at 3500 miles it should be well less than at 500 miles; this would be especially true in an engine which has not been correctly broken in. If both the bearings and the rings were properly broken in you should not be seeing metallic stuff in the oil.

Can you do a compression test on your cylinders? It's not a technically difficult thing to do; one just has to have a compression tester and a helpful friend. That test can tell you quite a bit in terms of the rings sealing the combustion chamber and might fend off a trip to the shop.

Firstly cheers for the response boys,

dropped the van into a vw specialist today, he said there seemed to be a bit more crankcase pressure than you'd expect but not overly worrying. The timing was way out however!!

To me it looks like when its idling and warmed up it actually is sticking more out of the breather than the exhaust, now it actually idles properly i can see it lessens with revs. I've had a look at my 79 1600tp and with oil cap off it too sticks quite a lot of fumes out of the breather so i'm certainly less worried. I've compression tested it and all cylinders seem good. What is annoying is the amount of oil dripping out of the drain tube (rented a new house and drive is splattered now - oops), can I do away with this as I see my late bay doesn't have the drain tube?

cheers
Ginga
