I'd like to replace my original crankshaft pulley with something that has the timing scale printed/stuck to it. Not doing it for aesthetic reasons, but just want to make timing an easier job.
Any recommendations as to which one to go for - want compromise between quality and cost (obviously!) but not some crap that will bugger other stuff up....

If your existing pulley is ok (no oil leaks, damage etc) then get your protractor or tape measure out & make the appropriate markings on your stock pulley with a hacksaw then fill them with paint (assuming that they arent there already) alternatively(or as well) buy a decent timing strobe that can be advanced/retarded and then use the TDC mark.

There always seems to be people posting with problems regarding aftermarket pulleys - even the expensive ones as they can change the alignment with the alt/genny pulley or leak oil due the the differences in the oil slinging thread on the rear.

If you do chose to get an aftermarket pulley, get a brand named 1 such as Scat or Empi. I know though experiance that the cheap pulley like to break up. Saw it happen at the Suffolk Bugers autojumble on sunday, Don't get the smaller diameter power pulley for a bus though because it will rotate the fan slower causing the engine to overheat ;)

Sound advice exactly what I did, you cant beat the original pulley for quailty, and it costs nothing, as long as you have a kids geometry set you can raid

Yep - fair enough I guess!
'If it ain't broke....' an all that!

I've got three grooves in the original pulley, and as you say, easy to find out what the represent - although it would be handy if one (ie: TDC?) was bigger than the other 2.

I always forget which mark is which, but I think TDC mark is on the side of the pulley nearest the block on an orginal pulley

Here are my marks - so I reckon middle one is TDC, therefore first one is BTDC, third one, after...?

Oh, and whilst we are here - what exactly is my dizzi!
A vac-advance only?

This may help:

by the looks of it your engine is statically timed to 7.5BTDC.

Brilliant link Loxy - many thanks, makes it all very clear!
(and also confirms I got my BTDC and ATDC muddled up!)

Might be worth just double checking your pulley markings anyway just to confirm, theres been so many of these things made theres bound to be an odd ball or two out there.

Also look here to see if you can identify your dizzy from the part number - It "might" help tell you what your timing should be set to ;) - the euro ones may be slightly different???(may just be for later bays when the type 4 engine came in though?)
If you have a timing strobe it should also tell you what sort of advance you should be getting if the dizzy is working correctly.

EDIT:
The link would probably help
