A few months ago I had my gearbox rebuilt and a new clutch fitted, when the guy test drove it he realised all was not well,so he took out the clutch to find that one of the rivets had come out of the clutch plate. He then fitted another brand new clutch and all was well. Now a few months on and the thrust bearing is making a loud noise when the pedal is pressed down,so now its all got to come out again. It really pisses me off the crap parts that we are sold,it never used to be like this.Sorry about the rant,I feel better now.

Sorry to hear that but I have to disagree in one area its always been like that the only difference is that reputable parts were just that and unfortunately with globalisation the money men in firms want to make as many cut backs as possible so out source parts to the cheaper areas of the world.....theres always been a wealth of crap auto spares and always will......

best thing to do is always try VW first, you will be suprised what they still sell.

Absolutely, just because its old doesn't means they dont make it any more, VAG still produce ALOT of parts that will fit the bay, clutch and bearing parts, flywheel oil seals etc.

and try to buy german.. companies like bosch/beru etc. who supplied OEM parts are safe bets.

If it is an early bearing they are complete crap, I couldn't get a decent early one, the repro one did about 1500 miles before it was grinding. I upgraded to a genuine late clutch, 15000 miles late it is fine.

On the main dealer front, Chris, try Helston garages, they are really aircooled friendly.
