Hello All

Is there any way to make sure I'm getting the right parts for my '72 Arizona crossover? Parts websites seems to list parts for 68-72 or 72-79. Confusing.

I need to buy steering & front brake parts (discs, callipers, servo, steering damper) as well as ignition barrel parts.

Mine has the low light front with the large tail light rear.

Any help would be most appreciated as various parts suppliers said that it was a but suck & see but I'd have to pay the postage back.

Cheers, Terry

Best to take the parts off first (carefully just incase you need to reuse owt) then check the VW numbers on the parts if genuine, eg. 911-XXX-XXX or measure things like brake discs/pads.

Websites like VW heritage are good for searching for original numbers or comparing what parts look like.

Sites like JK etc are a bit too generic for my liking when it comes to displaying parts.

That's what scares some people off VWH's website at first but as you learn more, it becomes a main one, bit like C&C

Steering parts, so far as I'm aware are all early bay from the year before (71). Certainly the steering box is early. The brake disks however are Crossover specific as early bays were drum brakes, crossovers introduced disks and late bays had thicker discs (with calipers to suit). Ignition barrells I don't know about unfortunately.
72 was the changeover year and I think August 72 was the specific month of introduction for the Crosser. Be aware that there are quite a few Crosser only parts that will come up such as front arches and rear bumper irons to name a couple...

Zcat7 is spot on. First thing is to check your build date here: http://www.vw-mplate.com/mcode.php
This will help a lot as in my experience the majority of crosser parts fall into the pre-72 category. There are some parts that are 71-72 only and a few (brake discs/calipers come to mind) that are '71 only. Our crossers have more in common with Earlies than lates so if in doubt go for the early part.
And don't be fooled by the stupid prices for used crosser calipers that may still be around, you can buy cheap new ones that bolt straight on from brakeparts.co.uk

Steering damper is standard, calipers can be rebuilt as i did with mine, new pistons and seals. Servo is the dual one and available as are the discs and pads. Ignition stuff can be tricky, look up Desi Yates on Facebook as he has loads of bits, indicator switches are rare as hens teeth so pray yours is ok.
Best to ask before you buy anything as there is such variation.
Mine is nearing end of resto so have picked up bits that may help. Based in kent

Mine are 1 year only brakes up front had a right game getting them sorted some years back mines a 72 reg built 71

Steering box is early as said before - If your bus is RHD its worth doing the late bay steering box mod as these are easier and cheaper to come by unless you plan on going down the steering rack route .
Brakes as has been said before are one year only and again you can mod to late bay disks and keep same stud pattern.
Rear bumper and irons are one year only although early bumper can be used just got to drill holes slighty further apart .
a rule of thumb I use is if its for the front go early if its for the rear go late :)
