Wasn't sure if I should put this in technical but anyway, what speed do you cruise at on the motorway/A roads, both in terms of efficiency and the limits of your bus?

Our camping friend Ralphie, is an ex-VW technician from many moons ago and noes the standard 1600 engine like the back of his hand, he has always said 56mph. He's always last to arrive though... :)

See if I do just under 50 I seem to get decent MPG, anything over and the bus drinks fuel and the engine sounds like it's struggling. I don't think I've seen 56 yet

Il bet he never turns up with oily hands though? :p

In the 10years plus I've known Ralphie, I don't think he's broke down once. May be just luck, but he also drives to his temperature gauge. Which can be something people forget. Low and slow that's the way forward people ;-)

I have several gauges and to be honest I do look at them fairly regularly.

This last weekends trip to Belgium saw us cruising at between 50 - 55 mph all day and my oil temp didnt get above 60deg although it wasnt far above freezing most of the time and sometimes was hitting -2degrees abient

On the way home I was not hanging around and pushed the engine a little riding at 60mph at a little over 3k rpm (standard 1600cc sp) and the temp didnt get above 70deg

Whats the max safe sustainable revs?

Im not sure but in the height of summer i will reduce my speed when the temp gets to 100deg

I'd say, if you're doing less than 56mph you shouldn't be on a motorway in the first place

Came back at 65mph last weekend from Belgium, that probably is about 60 as I run 70 series tyres

I don't drive on the motorway for that reason, stick to A roads but this is why I asked. I'd like to be able to cruise at 55/60 so what would I need to do to make this achievable, bigger engine?

Mines happy to sit at 60 on the speedo all day (58 on the satnav) on a 1600 sp, can go to 70 but wouldn't like to do it for long

It is a tintop with r n r no wardrobes etc, so depends on spec, a fully loaded westy with pop top will weigh a lot more and prob be slower/cruise differently etc :D

That sounds a little low to me, do you have a thermostat on your engine? Running too cold can be as bad as too hot...

Working temperature should be somewhere between 80-120 deg C on a run.

Thought all the big trucks had speed limiters that stopped them going above 56mph. :)

Saw somewhere on here that cruising revs was optimal 3600 rpm (most efficient fan speed for cooling) - my rev counter warning light is set to 3800 rpm and I cruise at revs not speed - downhill 65 - average 55-60 on a 1641 twin port with 34ICT's (though my speedo bounces all over the shop and I don't trust it! Sat navs typically under read I beleive (may be wrong))

So if you're doing 50mph, those big lorries are then forced to overtake you. Not a nice place to be I'm sure.
And because those lorries are now no longer in the inside lane they are being a pain in the arse to everyone else.
Just sayin'
