Cruising speed?

It's the fuel that is increasingly bothering me... I'm off to EBI and then to the Alps at the end of June and am seriously having thoughts about the percentage of the budget that will be fuel.

That diesel T25 Westy... it haunts my dreams with it's buddy, T4 Westy TDi... :shock:

I am sure many of us have had similar thoughts. I cam e to the conclusion that its a bit of a "yes and but no" situation.

The petrol bay will cost more in fuel than the diesel T4 - maybe 10mpg better? On the other hand, within overall expenditure, the saving in fuel is soon wiped out by depreciation and possibly in cost of repairs, insurance, plus early bay no road tax to pay - how much extra fuel does that buy every year?

I have been thinking about something much newer too but the thought processes needed to make a rational decision make my head spin :lol:

This is all good reading for me. I've not owned my bus for long and I'm yet to take her on any long journeys, the last thing I want to do is kill the poor girl! My bus is completely standard, including the dash. What would be recommended to install to avoid disaster and keep an eye on things?

The dipstick mounted oil temp device is a cheap alternative yet effective

Although for normal running in the uk they aren't strictly necessary

I like cruising around 55/60mph, especially if it's windy, as it makes the drive less stressful as you don't have to worry about the van wandering in the breeze. However driving back from Derbyshire a couple of years back it had no problems cruising at 70/80mph and I'd have no worries cruise at that speed again but I prefer to take it easy and just cruise along.

Absolutely - however that red light coming on could be unnecessary and quite distracting if you have driven standard buses for many years without issue

Not to mention the fact that if you buy a T4 all your friends will disown you, the wife will leave you, and everyone will point and laugh as you drive by

Hi i tend to cruise around 60 mph giving me another 5 mph if i have to overtake something....like a milk float :lol: Havent managed to overtake much else unless its parked :lol: :lol: . I dont see the point of thrashing an old Bus, if i wanted to go fast i would have bought a sports car [ just a bit too much mid life crisis for a bloke of my age, but why have a mid life crisis, my life has been one big crisis :lol: :lol: :lol: ].
On the fuel front how about an Lpg conversion ? Mind you they are expensive and youve got to do alot of miles to get your money back.
On the gauge front i have bought both oil temp and oil pressure gauges.....or as i like to call them "paranoid" gauges. Your never bored with paranoia!

I normally cruise between 60 and 65 and oil temp gauge reads about 110, that was till i broke down in belgium with a fooked carb and no compression in one cylinder. might be joining the 55 mph gang from now

My T4 cost £3.5k a yr in fuel, tax ins etc :shock: it cruised at 80 no probs but drank like Oliver Reed. I will be cruising at 60 max in my bay coz it's cool and I want everyone to have a chance to see it :mrgreen:
