custom car lingo... why?!?

...im having one of those WHY??? days!!!
something that has been bugging me for a long time now.... custom car (incl vee dubs) lingo....

why is a ride that is freshly sprayed 'now IN paint'....not 'its been painted' ???
why are alloys 'wrapped in rubber'... not 'had new tyres fitted' ????
whats with... 'dropped the lump'.... why not 'took the engine out' ?????
why do we 'hit it with some chrome'....not 'put some new bumper/mirrors/lights on' ???

I sometimes have the same trouble with my COD4 gaming clan - think it corresponds to any activity that is seen as cool 8)

Ha, I thought it was just me! I may say 'dropped the engine out' because in essence that is what you do with an air cooled VW. But the other stuff, no way. On a different tack, I hate with a passion 'Text speak', you know, m8 for mate, cu tmrw, etc etc. I point blank refuse to write text messages in this manner and have been known to reply 'translation please' upon recieving them! Anyone remember the series of TV programmes titled 'Grumpy Old Men'? Well I recon I could do a whole series on my own! Once I get on my soapbox there's no stopping me :lol:

I say old chap, I do believe ones computer is diplaying a serious fault. However, if the inability to produce legible text should happen to be down to ones poor command of the English language, I am advised that said computer has a facility known as 'spell check'.

I know what you're saying, but where does it stop? For example, when did 'my car' or 'my van' become 'my ride'

It does make me smile when British folk driving a German product use so much American slang. We've all heard/used it:

Silencer - Muffler
Manifold - Header
Bulkhead - Firewall
Beetle - Bug
Standard - Stock
Gear lever - Shifter
Wheels - Rims

The list goes on....

At the end of the day, I suppose the main thing is that people know what you're talking about.

I must admit, i have used the yank slang

When my dad was having an aircooled break, he got into amercian iron. Mustangs, Carmaros etc and knocked around with some hardcore yank tank owners, i was just a kid so it rubbed off on me abit :lol:

the water cooled v dub scene are even worse. talking about "rollers" rather than wheels "zorst". i dislike the word "haters" that seems to have come from across the pond too. also "the scene" seems to get mentioned a lot too.

I might be on my own here but "rat look" ...... is it custom car lingo or a more generally accepted term relating to things other than cars? Only thing close I've heard before is "rat bikes" relating to vintage and slightly querky looking choppers
