I have a switch hidden behind the passenger seat ,one side goes to earth , the other is loose in the engine bay with a spade terminal on it. Could it be attached to the coil as an anti theft cutout , if so which side of the coil :? Cheers Chris

If it is a security feature, then the wire should connnect to the same coil terminal as the wire from the dizzy. If you connect it to the other side you could cause damage to the wiring loom/ ignition switch because the circuit feeding the coil/carb is not usually protected by a fuse as an unfortunate friend found out

If one side of the swoitch is going to earth, then you can't connect the other side to the coil.

I think it would be safer and less trouble to isolate the wire from the fusebox which supplies the coil using a relay.Get a normal 30 amp relay which has 4 pins marked 30,87,85 and 86.Your earth can go to pin 85.Cut the wire coming from the fusebox to the coil and connect the fusebox end to pins 30 and 85.Then connect other end of the cut wire (the end going towards the coil etc) to pin 87.This will save running any wiring to the engine bay.If you do all this without a relay then your switch could burn out eventually due to the current involved.

As this is an unfused wire,it might be a good idea to fit an inline fuse when you cut the fusebox to coil feed fit a fuse then connect to the relay.
