Quick question with regards to CV joint reassembly after cleaning.

On the outer hub, this has a groove running around one of the outside edges, should this be fitted facing the rubber boot or away from the axle ?

The one I've removed has it facing the rubber boot but when googling I've found different opinions on different web sites, just wondering which the right way is ?

With regards to the other bits I' think I'm good in that :-

Inner hub - the side with the ridge faces the rubber boot
Cage - the side with the thinner edge faces the boot

Also, finally, do you also fit the washer that is supplied with the kit as, again, there are some websites that state that this should be discarded

Many Thanks

There were three types of CV joints used, which is why there's some debate about it. If in doubt, get the Bentley out. Nonetheless it seems as if you've the same CV joint as most folks, the later design, so see the below.

The inner hub should have the chamfered section on the splines nearest the boot/closest to the centre of the driveshaft. I'm not sure what that means for the external lip, can't remember if they line up or not.

The outer hub has the groove closest to the flange, so away from the boot, like so.

The reason we're told to discard the spring washer inboard of the CV joint is because it can force the circlip out of position if the groove for it on the driveshaft wears out, which then means you've a loose circlip in your CV joint. I've still got them in mine, but probably won't replace them next time I have to change a driveshaft boot.

Thanks for that, my only concern is that when taking off the old cvs The lip on the outer hub was against the boot (ie facing inward) so my thinking is that I should reassemble this way due to wear etc ?
