dude we just got back from the maldives a few weeks ago, fantastic place..... we had the same dilema, we went round all the scuba shops and they seemed really expensive £50 just for the mask etc....

In the end we opted for a pair of these off ebay

good quality kit, nice fit, no leaks etc. Top tip tho with it being new you will need to wipe some toothpaste on the inside of the mask, leave it over night then wash off in the morning... it stops the mask fogging up.

We stayed at Hudhuranfushi on the north atoll 20 mins speedboat ride north of Male, where are you staying?

thanxs bud,we are staying at kuramathi http://www.kuramathi.com/village/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

i dont think the reef is the best hear but we wanted one of the smaller islands for some chill time, cant wait really looking forward to it,ive had my old snorkle and mask about 9 years and its started turning yellow,so thought id treat us both to a newen.

cant wait sun sea food and drink, not to forget lots of the other esential

oh thanxs for the toothpaste tip

The beer over there is called Bintang from bali and its 8)

Your island is about the same size as the one we went to. You will love it, the beer as mentioned was great, the food fantastic, the surf(on our island)was awesome as were the water sports and scuba and the Maldivians are unbelievably friendly and helpful,

Have a good one :)

Buying a mask can be a personal choice, you need to go into a diving shop and try on and try the breathing through the nose test with the mask on, if the mask lets/sucks air in it will prob leak under the water. Then find out which one you like and try to get it off the net cheeper. Simply scuba/snorkel are good bought a fair bit of diving kit from them.
Went throught 3 masks b4 i found a good one,( think i must have a funny shpe face), the one i use now is a old one from a diving buddy, perfect fit.

The simply scuba Seems a bit dear, but then im a bit tight.

Have to agree, I've had mine a bloody long time now excellent fit took a lot of looking to find the right fit, but worth it to get one that doesnt leak all the time nothing worse snorkeling/diving on the reefs and the bloody thing pisses water the minute you try taking a picture....

NO!!!!

Buy it from the shop you try them in!!

If everyone keeps using specialist independant shops to leach their advice and try stuff on so that you can buy it cheap on the net later then they'll all go out of business.
Ask them and I suspect they'll do a discount or price match, just let them make the sale if they are providing you with their time and good advice.

Sorry must of stuck a note on this.
Got to admit on some of the specialist diving equipment i got, i did come from the shop i went into or local to me. Cant beat local service and after sales service.

But on general items if i know what i want and cant forsee any probs with them get it at the cheepist place.

My local dive shop shut down, which was a great loss but he had an internet buisnes and over the counter shop. Internet goods come from the same sheleves as the shop stuff does internet was a lot cheeper. When you asked to price match web site he didnt want to know. Wheres the logic in that. The only major bit of kit i bought mailorder was my regs they worked out £200 cheeper than the local shops. If its savings like that im afraid it will be over the net every time.

anything to save a few quid in this economy

a friend of mine saw a bike for £800 at a local shop, then had a look on the net where it was£650
so he went back to the shop and the chap said thats the price if you dont want it dont have it,so he said well i tell ya what id sooner use you so how about 700 the chap at the small local shop said no  well i run a small place myself and a poor sale is beter than no sale.

the shopkeeper should make the most of what comes through the door imho.

remember on the net, most stuff can be sent back if its no use.why not just not go in the shop in the first place????

can of worms :|

oh thanxs for all the advice peeps

sorry didn't mean to crash the thread or sound off hand, I just think it's important to support local stores and this is quite close to heart.
Of course it will always be cheaper on line and it's up to the shop to remain competitive, I just think they should be given the opportunity. If they don't want to make a sale then that's short sighted of them and their loss, as said it's important to make the most of what comes through your doors and a good deal would promote further business for them.
Good advice does have a value though, I'm always happy to pay somewhere in the middle between the srp and the web price if I think it's fair and the shop has provided me with good service.

That's it, I'll shut up now

A good one, has a whole through it, and a bad one and this is very bad, does not.

Trust me on this one I know.
