HI i have bought two new doors from vw heritage I have had them fitted. I have just fitted all the lock bits to the door but im having trouble with the release handle and the lock that goes on the inside of the door if i screw the handle to the door the rod that goes to the lock does not reach by about 1.5inchs. :? Is there a differance between early bay doors and late ones or the brazalian doors :?:

yes you have to buy an adapter kit to get late doors onto an early bay, costs about £15-20 per kit and you need two.

The doors are fitted to the bus. Here are a few pictures.

If you put the door card on,with the release catch fitted, does the door card line up with the door catch?

Or in other words could the pre drilled holes be in the wrong place? In which case re drill the holes to where it lines up.Because unless your rod has shrunk,it looks like the screw holes for the operating lever are in the wrong place.

I chucked the doors cards out ages ago.

If you've still got the old doors, measure from the edge of the door to the holes for lock lever on it and compare to the new door.

No chucked them out ages ago as well. My other half hates stuff lying around. :?

OK I had this problem and had door cards from JK and I had to redrill the holes and it all works fine now :D

Did you have new doors as well. was the release catch working before you fitted the door cards? If so did you have to buy shorter rods? :?

On the drivers side there was a new door, and the rod was to short so i re-drilled that one, the passenger side was fine, I am guessing later doors must have longer rods :D

If you've got that rod fitted to the lock mechanism properly,it can only be the holes are in the wrong place, redrill them for now until you get some door cards, you can always move them back to the original place if you need to.

Later doors are different to early ones. The catch is indeed in a different place. I used a thread insert tool to fit some new fixings further back. It is an easy job to do.

But the pressing is the same* Notice the identical set of indents just back from the threaded holes. If you drill the holes at the same height in that set of pressings it should work fine. As there is good access its easy enough to just whack a pair of short m8 bolts through with a nut on the back.

If you have trouble with the door catch not releasing from the inside you can shorten the rod by putting a pair of pliers on the rod and twisting it slightly to put an S in it. Doesn't take much tweeking. If you tweek it too far you'll find the doors won't lock or stay locked.

Also, just an anal thing, but in the photo that handle is upside down.

I'm assuming you've also blanked off the holes for the late style door lock poppers?

*As in the pressing for the handle mount. As far as I've seen there are 4 or 5 different types of inner door pressing
