Hi everyone. My 68 has been running a little hot recently, after checking the mixture, tappet gaps, timing etc, I noticed the front piece of tinware (above the gear box) does not fit properly.

After doing a search on here it looks likely I have type 1 tinware (also note many people extend this). From what I have read it looks like this is different from year to year. So my question is this.... what years did they change and will later ones fit, if not how to I know what to look out for?

I have a 68 bay with a single port engine... is the only difference for the later type the gap for the dog house cooler?

Many thanks

From what your saying you have a beetle tin..... SP?

The Bus version has an extention on top giving it a squarer profile, filling the gap.

68 - 71 SP exactly the same

71 TP has the doghouse aperture

72 has the latebay style tin

You could buy the extension piece and weld it in or get the 68 - 70 tin.

Just found out I have the same issue. Where can I get the extension piece from and is it an engine out job to fit it?

Thanks for the info Araon, so basically i should look for this piece of tin without the dog house aperture and this will do the trick?

Yes you are right, it is has had a 1500 single port beetle engine fitted by the PO, prob upgrade this next year.

I'd assume this would make quite a big difference to the running temp?

Just done this, so, take my advice, if your modifying a bug piece of tinware, buy the panel from 67 BAY (steve) on here. He makes them, and, and as i've just made mine, I can tell you unless you have 3 hours spare, metal fab tools and knowledge, a welder and a plasma cutter, what he charges is well worth it.
