What is the difference between Early and late calipers and discs. My discs are warped and need to replaice them.
I have in the agrage a set of calipers of a new beam i fitted may recon them. Not sure if late of early.

any help please. RD

early calipers are smaller (considerably) 73> are larger and consequently the steering knucle and splash back were redesigned, the pads on lates are thicker as are the discs.....

JK do a late to early complete kit, and I believe they sell the mountin hardware seperately but you'll need to check...Froggy has a thread open at the moment with link to the JK page....

I have some early disc's and calipers for sale. The calipers are reconditioned ones which have less than 500 miles on them if that is any help. Here is a picture of them to let you know what they look like (and if anyone wants them!):

No, the late caliper has the brake pipe in the same position. The late ones I seen usually have what looks like 2 bleed nipples whereas the early ones usually have only one bleed nipple.

not on mine, both brake lines enter the center of the caliper, but there are two brands of caliper, one is Lucas and i cant remember the other sorry. there maybe differences

As Clarkson said.... the two bleed nipples were the second generation 71 from march and continued through to the lates and in 72 increased in physical dimensions.....

From what i found out about early/ late calipers.

Early calipers aperture (where the pads go in) is 47mm wide and has 2 bleed nipples. Lates are about 55mm wide.

Early pads are 15mm thick retaining clips held in with spring type pins, Lates are 19 mm thick and have bigger retaining springs and have circlip type pins.

Early discs are 8mm thick and Lates are 13mm thick.

Thay are handed due to the cut out on the pistons, cut outs go to wards the bottom.

Early brake bits are expensive and Lates are cheeper.

Prehaps we can make this a sticky so that people can keep adding to it.

Will add more when i think of them.

If you have working 71 calipers with good discs they are no more expensive to repair etc than later brakes. you can get either pad 71 or 72-79 for the same price. Dont make the mistake i made and shell out for complete replacement because you think you cant find the pads etc for the year only caliper.

Repair kits were the same price for both.
