Ive recently put these on my (previously very stock) early bay. Put simply, the nuts only go onto the studs about 1/2 inch...clearly not safe. The same problem when I use the original nuts too. Midland Wheels, who supply them, tell me the tapered nuts theyve provided are the standard ones they always supply for fitting to early bays. Theyve never had a comment like mine before. Weird. :?

I know the studs havent been altered or shortened in any way. I also know there aint no spacers or anything on that might cause this problem. EMPI narrow 5's go on hundereds of vans every year, so what am I doing wrong/what do I need to do?

Confused of Wolverhampton

An early bay would normally have drum brakes, wide 5 wheels and use bolts to secure the wheels. What you have is the cross over model and some parts were 1 year only. I know the calipers were. Is it possible that this is another of the 1 year only issues??

can you take a pic of the front drum with the wheel off? could it be the discs were changed at some stage in the life of the bus? the stud length may have changed? i can compared it against mine. i have a 71 disc brakes but repalced them with 72 on brakes, i can compare both.

My early has disc and narrow 5 stud pattern, small rear lights, half moon air vents, so not all early bays have drums and wide fives.
got empi 5's on mine with the nuts supplied by midland wheels no problem.

So you have a cross over version. All early Bays (pre< 1970) had wide 5 wheels and drum brakes.

'71 is NOT (what is normally termed) a crossover.

And yes, it has 2 year disc brakes (Interchangeable, if not identical, with those from a '72 crossover) which are different from the '73onwards versions.

WHS
As far as I am aware across over is an early at the front and a late at the back (tall lights and square air vents).
So mine is an late early not a cross over

Carefull!!!

Crossover start 08/71 to 08/72. So if your bus was build before August, you have an early bay/T2a, from august, it's a "transition" bus, a t2"ab" like french guy like to call it... :D

It's better to speak "millesime" (always August to July), not "years"
Disc brakes (5*112) where put on early bay by option (request of the customer) since August 70 (so millesime 71)
