End float??!

I bought an engine back in the summer which was sold as no excessive end float, and ran fine. However iv since stripped it down a bit and with no flywheel attached the end float is horrendous!

Should this be the case as there is no flywheel on it or is it fucked? Id say the crank has a good 2-3mm of play in it :?

Crankshaft end play is checked with flywheel fitted not forgetting the 3 shims between crankshaft and flywheel. End play should be between .007 mm and .015 mm.
