A thought has just sprung into my head! I thought I had to make sure the seals in my bus's engine bay were tip-top as the flow of air is crucial to keeping the engine running cool yet baja bugs have their engines hanging out in the wind like a drunken rugby player's arse! Have I been fussing over nothing?

Good question. Trikes too...

i'm guessing it's moreso the fact that they are hanging out in the fresh air - it's all about even cooling so the engine is the same temperature all over so it doesn't run hotter in one area more than the other causing warping, heat rises so without your engine bay seal the heat from the exhaust will go up into the engine bay and you'll feed the fan hot air, when the engine isn't enclosed as like in a baja or trike it's less of a problem.

That's my take on it anyway but i'm happy to be corrected - every day is a schooly.

Pretty much this, a bus is a heavy old thing compared to a buggy too so keeping cool is harder as well.

Its the old adage of if you look in the engine bay and can see daylight you need to seal it up :)

Plus for all their hanging it out in the cool, my memory of bajas back in the day is that they usually ran hotter.
Was just as well that hanging oil coolers off them was part of the look

Having no bodywork or engine lid means the hot air just blows away and hence will not get sucked back into the cooling fan which can draw its air freely from the open air. Simple really
