Hi,

I'm about to go and view a 1970 Westy, however the 1600 engine is probably in a sorry state.

Is it worth rebuilding tired engines, or for piece of mind, go out and buy something new?

What engine would you recommend for reliability?

Links welcome.

1776 is a good start , reliability all depends on who builds it and how well you maintain it
if your budget stretches though a good 2110 stroker with 44's - Ive currently got a 1776 with twin 36 dells and more than happy with it keeps up with traffic on motorway and still got some oomph when you hit the hills, but I'm collecting parts for a 2110 as my mate has one in his splitty and its awesome

Probably aiming for a 1600, but may stretch to 1776.

It's hard to get a good recommendation after a bit of reading.

New VEGE, TES, Mexican or someone who can build a new engine? :?

Brand new 1776cc built in a proper certfied factory not a shed at the back of a garden:

Alex - what else is do you need to install onto that engine before it is fitted?

How far from turnkey are they?

Wondering what the total cost of the whole engine inc ancillaries would be ready to simply fit to a gearbox

I can do you a quote like that but will be hard over a forum as too many questions and options,

email me [email protected] or call 01444 251 270 and I can sort it for you.

They are a long block that needs to be run in so need all the ancilaries fitted, (does come with instructions and advice pack) Also I am on the phone and able to help as much as I can.

I would think you'll use all the tinware from your engine,

You'd need to budget for some Carbs (£400 to £800) an exhaust (£200 to £500), Oil filter and cooler kit (£200 to £300)

Hope that helps

Cheers

Alex

Cheers for the info - just looking at how much I would need to save from my upcoming Afghan tour!

Ball park figure you have provided looks quite reasonable. :D

£3000 for the 1776? How long have they been on the market? Have any issues been reported with them?

We have had this spec of engine being built for 10 years or so, but changed who we had put them together just over 2 years ago. They are now manufactured in a proper ISO registered factory that build engines for ford and other manufactuerers. We have had very few issues with the 1776cc.

These in my opinion are the best engine available for the price, they are not thrown together by a guy in a shed they are produced in a proper factory to proper tollerances and specifications. Unless you want to pay double that to have an engine specialist build you a bespoke engine then i would go down this route. Anyone offering a bespoke engine for this kind of price is not spending enough time on it in my view.

my email is [email protected] or you can call 01444 271 250 and ask for me if you want more info or to talk it over.
