Trying to find out what engine I have fitted in the van - the book I have says that the number should be either under the generator support, facing to the rear or on the crankcase near the join in front of the fan housing.

There is a number by the generator - AD023617 but it is not on the list in the book.

I know that the fitted engine is not the original, and I was told that the "spare" engine that came with the van was the original - that one has a number by the generator - AD224805

neither of these numbers are on the list and I can't see any numbers on the crankcases - where should I be looking???

Anyone know if the above numbers are engine numbers or something else????

Also the dizzy fitted has a part number ending in 009, I take it that means it is a "009" that some engine shops fit, but is it any good??

What dizzys do people run for normal road use????

They are AD engine codes. Never originally fitted at the factory.

At the the bottom of the page

Think you will find that list is wrong....

Try this one:

My 72 has the original AD coded engine still fitted to it.

Thanks, so it is only the first two letters - AD - which mean anything?

and the "spare", supposedly original could actually be original?

The letters tell you what type of engine it is, the numbers are just a serial number.

Yes it could be, if you get a birth certificate from the vw museum it will tell you the engine number it left the factory with ;)

I am looking to get rid of my 009 dizzy too, and have a 1600tp AD code engine. I have looked at the list on Old Volks Home and looks like I either need:
0231 167 055 211 905 205Q 0231 176 033 043 905 205D Bus 1971 1600
or
0231 180 001 211 905 205S 0231 176 033 043 905 205D Bus 1971 1600
Original w/Speed Limit Rotor

My bus is a crossover, but built late 71, so has a 1600 type 1 engine so assume above is correct.
I would like to know what my options are. I know that you can buy new bosch vac advance dizzys for about £100 and other brand for less.

What differences are there in model numbers, and beetle dizzys etc and what about new v old?

Cheers,
Dave
