Sounds good. I'm just running SAE30, but will change to mutigrade next time.
I think as long as you change it regulary, it'll be fine with most stuff, you dont need any fancy stuff, no mobil 1 or suchlike, too thin, it'll only leak out anyway!

Probably just some old style oil like DH mentions, dead simple to change oil, and 20/50 is cheap, you could do it every month, Morris stuff is cheap, and your local motor factor always have cheap stuff

Cheers!

looking at dropping engine oil, which is the best to put back in,thanks Dave......

I'd always go for Morris. They do a version ideal for stock non-full-flow aircooled engines (i.e. just the normal oil screen in place) that allows any particles to sink into the sump/filter. Looks like modern oils in modern engines allow the bits to circulate to allow the external filter to catch them.

Have a read of http://www.morrislubricants.co.uk/lubricants/company.asp?wp=96

Ours is running on VW's Quantum Synta 10/40 which the Guy who serviced it (Aircooled Nut) recommended and it seems to be fine.
It is also recommended for Bugs by JustAircooled.

Just bought 5 litres from local VW dealer this morning for £14.61 so not expensive. They also do a 15/40.

VW Heritage wnted £24.

I use the 20/50 classic stuff from Halfrauds which is £17 for 5 litres. I have been told that modern oils have too many cleaning agents that could cause more harm than good by removing old deposits in the engine.
