As has been said. Theres a lot of engines with just a single mark that is not TDC - its a timing mark. VW replacement pullys had a dimple on the outer side of the pully rim which marked TDC and the inner side had to be filed with the timing mark for whatever engine it was being fitted to.
Then you get aftermarket pullys and engines which have had pullys from other engines fitted.
So the rule is if the engine is new to you then dont rely on any timing marks. Check them first. Its easy enough to do using a pencil down the plug hole to find tdc and then measure along the pully circumference to your timing mark.
Its important because these aircooled engines are more sensetive to incorrect timing than most.
