Help!!
Not a bay but a beetle 1303 standard engine. Was running rich and failed MOT on emissions, got the mobile tune man in and he got it a bit better but said maybe try a different carb.Had one on the engine taken out the bay so swapped it . . .it was worse!Original one back on and started it up and ran like a proverbial bag of spanners back-fired shot flames out the b ack and not run since.
Tha plugs were badly sooted up which went with the running rich so new plugs and leads including coil lead purchased from Halfords.Set the points and timing as per John Muirs 'How to keep your VW alive step by step idiots guide'but still no cigar as he says.
It had been constantly backfireing but now it turns over but wont fire up?Got a spark and fuel.Have filled it with fresh fuel as it had been standing but dont think it owt to do with that as it was running before.
Any suggestions as to next step, have swapped the coil and condenser off bay engine??they looked newer but that may not mean anything. It made little or no difference. The new plugs are still shiny clean and just smell of petrol when removed which suggest not much in the way of ignition going on??!!
Any one in the know local to me East coast near Grimsby DN40 3JR able to throw any light on it . . . Cheers

check the coil, said your getting a spark but still maybe on the way out, and the condenser , flick the points open with the ignition light on big spark bad small good, i think ! just got off nights so
