Did a bit of work over the weekend and started putting the heat exchangers and back box on the bus.... Most has gone well execept for the connectors that link the back box to the heat exchngers with the wire gasket type thingy. These are an absolute bitch to fit am I missing something!!!! Lost light now will give it another go later in the week when I've got a cool head but any tips between now and then would be gratefully received.

I found that different suppliers kits were better than others (unfortunately I cant remember which one was best  but I'm sure they were made in Germany), was toying with the idea of welding some flanges onto the heat exchangers & exhaust to provide a better fit - I have a turbo thomas exhaust now so it isnt a problem ;)

had the same problem about a year ago with mine. got the gsf fitting kit.was an absolute pain in the arse! gave up in the end and took it to my local garage thinking with it up on a ramp it be an easy job for them, but even they could only get one side on!! ended up getting gsf's bettle fitting kit which has the clamps in two halfs, rather than the hinged ones. it was still a pain in the arse, but i managed to get it on.

Hmm interesting...

I fitted heat exchangers just before Christmas using a JK clamp kit which had a clamp in two halves and found I had to bend and shape the clamp to get it to fit. Refitted again three weeks ago with a Heritage kit (hinged clamp) and found it much easier - however I guess the second time I had the engine out which made it easier than doing it with the engine in!? Also I had to use a longer bolt to draw the two sides of the hinged clamp together before the supplied bolt would reach!

Thanks for the advise got both types and both are real f**kers to fit on a camper...gonna have another quick go now......

Got one on after much effort then remebered the back box is knackered....Gonna start looking at a stinaless exhaust that I can use with a standard 1600cc and then as I mildly tune it will still do the job any ideas anyone?

Hi

There's a guy on VZi making standrad-style SS exhausts for Beetle and Type2 bus. His brand name for the products is Silver Spanner I think. I can't remember his username but it's not hard to find price 200-250 IFRC.
