Hi guys!
Need to find a good exhaust for a tuned 1776 "Type1" engine. It must clear the rear engine support beam and the tow bar. If possible, I want the bus to be quiet and sound like a Volkswagen.
Any ideas?

A stock one then? perhaps in stainless? Something like this: http://www.volkszone.co.uk/VZi/showthread.php?t=516497" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Most aftermarket exhausts are going to change the sound & make it louder

Hiya dog,

Now right off the bat let me be clear that I am not knocking the exhaust that Loxy linked.

However, let me lend just a bit of advice concerning stainless steel exhaust systems. On the face of it they sound great in terms of preventing the rot one typically sees in Bus or Bug exhaust systems. But in speaking with a couple of Bus owners who have used these stainless exhaust systems for better than two years it seems that these stainless systems can rot from the inside out. Apparently the combination of heat and exhaust gases (along with moisture from condensation) wreaks havoc inside these things.

This alone would not put me off looking seriously at a stainless. But I would definitely want to talk to folks who had been running that particular exhaust for some time and get their perceptions before I put my cash on the counter.

To sound like a vee dub you'll need a standard exhaust system, But as you have a 1776 motor and i'm guessing a twin carb set-up a 4 into 1 system would be the best thing in my opinion because the larger capacity engine will need a more free breathing exhaust, the small diameter of a standard pipe would have adverse affects on the performance of the engine. The quite pack is good for ground clearance and clears the support bay, i have 1 on my bus and it's a quite but deep sound, but can get abit shouty if you give it some. But like i say thats my opinion, some may disagree :)

Have a look at the exhaust set ups that VW Speedshop sell, I think they do one suitable for a 1776 in a bus,
