Have just paid the company in Amsterdam who recovered my data with a bill for £810. It's the hard way to learn how to back up files I guess, but not as hard as an engine bay fire would be!

A guy at work suggests RAID to back up - anyone know if this can work with two external hard drives or do they need to be internal?

Anyway, I can now get on with my football grounds books one of which is all but complete. If you have any interest in old grounds in SE London & Kent I have some amazing pics...

If your only concerned with backing up data, images etc. then get an external drive that bundles with one touch backup software like retrospect as this is the cheapest option. If you are worried about losing your operating system, programs and data etc. then raid is the best option...

You can buy external raid pre-setup, its expensive, but personally the cheapest option is buy 2 identical drives and do it yourself as long as your motherboard supports Raid, as most modern boards do. If you need help PM me and let me know what type of hardware you have.

If you go the route of internal drives be aware you need to re-install your OS and programs on to the raid setup to make it bullet proof. this can be tricky as it usually involves changing BIOS or CMOS settings of your computer before startup.

Oooh, Dartford FC! I used to go watch them play all the time when I was a'wee nipper'. The ground looked a bit different to that though.

I used to go to school in Dartford!

That's just one Dartford pic, I have a number of others of Watling Street. I also have one of the Downs school with an old footy stand in the playing field... plus loads more of the rest of kent.

Raid is more a form of redundancy than back up. for back up get an external hard drive and back up to there regularly, and then test the back up every now and then.

£810 isnt to bad a price for recovery, A client of mine once wanted data recovered from hard drive and he sent it to OnTrack over here, £5k later he had his data back.

unless you are happy to lose something make sure you back up.
