Does it make a big difference having the stat fitted with regulator flaps ? It wouldn't caused engine damage would it if run without, only takes longer to heat up to running temp. Only asking because I haven't got any :?

That`s when most of the wear and tear happens on your engine, so if it`s a keeper you might want to get some, and the best best bit is,,,,, it`s not a real biggy in terms of jobs. Saying that, I still haven`t fitted mine yet after having them for two years :oops: :oops:

This engine is really an unknown bit of kit, not sure on size. It's a bonus if it gets me to the mot station. It runs so I don't want to strip it just yet as I've got loads of other stuff to do.
 
Do you have plans for a more exotic motor later ?? Maybe?? If it`s just a chugger for now, then I wouldn`t get too upset or worried about it and start planning a little ahead to have another motor ready as a secondary project to run along side the bus project, then if it goes Pete Tong you are partially into it allready and so no biggy. Some peeps have some awful problems when their engine deserts them usually at the most inconvenient time imaginable like on their holidays etc etc, so they buy a replacement real quick as a knee jerk reaction from some places that you wouldn`t ordinarily want to do business with. Also you can just keep your eyes open for some flaps and thermo etc as you know that is on your to do list for this motor or the new one :mrgreen:

I've just reinstated my and after seeing the results (running temp wise) I'd say its mad not to have them.

I read a couple of articles from the old school gurus who state that the habit of removing the flaps started in California, where year round high temps meant that you could mostly get away without them. Run your motor anywhere else and you compromise it. As you'll see from my post, after fitting my oil temp gauge in January, I only got my engine up to 130 degrees whereas after fitting the flaps I leveled out at 180. This is definitely going to affect combustion efficiency and engine wear.
Its also interesting to notice that the flap design directs air toward the head, even when closed, so you are missing out on this important piece of cooling.

I think people see the flaps as hassle when it comes to maintenance but I'd say that installing the flaps has only added about 5 mins extra work to pull the fan shroud off/refit it, it really is easy. Also, to allay any fears, the thermostat design is a fail safe in that if the bellows split it defaults to fully open so don't worry about overheating.

People like Trikky2 and Sparkywig know their stuff when it comes to Type 1 engines and they wouldn't run without them.
 
That's it then another job to sort, the engine in the bay is marked up D 1........ Looking at details it's a 1200cc :shock: beetle motor. It's twin port though so who knows what's inside. It's got the proper holes for bay mounting at the back. I wouldn't go on holiday with it not knowing what it's like inside. It will do for local trips till I sort another.
 
I got a set and fitted them but found i had the wrong linkage bar for some reason :roll: i don't know if they are year related or if the ones i got were for a single port but the bar kept fouling on the oil cooler.
I ended up making my own crude linkage bar now all is good,but i had to remove the engine to fit the flaps inside the fan shroud because i could not get enough height also the linkage bar i believe original or not will still foul on the oil cooler when lifted up but i maybe wrong :roll: some one will be along to say.
 
Yes the linkage bar is different for models with the doghouse cooler (I checked before buying). With the set I bought I just popped the clips off the bar and put it to one side until I put the fan shroud on; 20 second job both ways with the right part, though not sure in your case Sharky as you have fabricated your own linkage.

For fitting/removal I found I could leave the left hand flaps mounted in the shroud and placed the right on on the cylinders so that I could connect the rod to the stat. Then I just slid the shroud on top, popped the 4 tin screws in and connected the rod and spring up.
