Batley, it's God awful!
Hi guys, wonder if anyone can help regarding gearboxes in particularly the final drive flange or maybe it is something further in? I have taken the gearbox out 'cos there was a bit of a knocking noise and on closer inspection there is a 'bit' of movement on the final drive flange in and out is this normal or should there be no movement if this is the case is there anything i can do about it, can I shim it or replace bits or is it something more such as the Diff being foooked - God I hope not - I'm skint :D

That's an early box. You might just need new bearings but when I last tried to get hold of some 3 years ago it was a mission. Perhaps try Bears gearboxes, they know their stuff but may only offer a re-build service rather than spares.

If it's the bearings you could try

Cheers Guys, seems to be the CV joints so I have repacked them with grease so they will have to do for now until I have the funds to replace - after 40 years service i can't complain really.

On the subject of gearboxes which i know little about is it possible to replace with a later style gearbox? Would this be a advantage and if so so type of gearbox would I need to look out for?

Hi Ade, the answer is yes, but only because you now has a few more ponies available to flog  So you can now get a slightly taller ratio on your box, and there are quite a few possibilities, a 1303, or one from a two litre or talk to someone at Bears about your final drive or just run slightly bigger tyres. A five speed from an old Porsche was getting a decent review from Tofufi not so long back. So is you nearly back on the road bud ?

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,,,, Run him in with the lower ratios anyhow, less stress less labour X2
