What Oil ? ? ?

If it works for you, great. I hope you get many more years happy motoring out of it.
I don't want to go all Matt Hancock on you but, i'm sticking with the science.
The oil discussion is on every forum and we all have our preferences. As long as it is changed regular an engine should do OK.
A gearbox, however is a different matter. The oil is very rarely changed so i prefer to put something good in there if poss.
I have a few bottles of Halfrauds gearbox oil (not sure where they came from) but still bought the Fuschs Titan for the bus. I see it as an investment in lower future costs.
If i bought a fancy new gearbox, at todays prices, i would happily shell out for the best oil to put in it.
As it stands my gearbox is likely the OG from '72. It whines a little but still going strong for now.

And just to put another cog in the discussion, a gearbox oil has different requirements and operates under different conditions to the engine oil. On the one hand it has no combustion by-products nor unburnt petrol going into it so it should last longer, but it does have to cope with extreme shearing not quite to the same extent as the engine.
I'm thinking now, about the mini's A-series all-in-one engine and gearbox, and the majority of motorcycle engines which do share the same oil between them... especially those with wet clutches.

I see what you did there ^^^ Plus I’m thinking that you are indeed very right in your points. My main point with gearbox oil now days is if you’re changing oil in an old gearbox, don’t put modern synth style oils in because of their cleansing effect which sounds great until it sluices out a load of old crap that was keeping everything in there nice and tight, but if you’re having a total rebuild so to all intentions a new box, then use either or. Interesting as you say about the A series oil, and I’m guessing that the service intervals and oil changes would be very similar to the VW stuff at about three to five thousand miles.

Also, modern oils can be too 'slippy' for the syncro rings in a lot of 'classic' gearboxes. This makes gear changes feel like you've filled the box with bostik, ask me how i know

Many moons ago i was sold GL5 g/box (by a Triumph 'specialist') oil for my Triumph Vitesse Mk2 . I suffered for years with a stoggy, stiff, orrible gear change till someone enlightened me GL5 was unsuitable. Put bog standard GL4 in and within a few hundred yards it felt like a new gearbox. So now ya know.

Hi, i think I'm going to Keith's field. Have a blast at the Corfe Castle bash
Liquid grease, I'm just happy my steering box has lubricant in it now, and a bung in the filler hole, a few days before DATC i discovered it had neither ! . The 'specialist' who the van was with when i first bought it informed they had filled it with grease, actually the filler hole was 'plugged' with grease , the box itself was virtually empty (going by how much oil it took to fill it!.

Here is a comprehensive description which should clarify what oil to use, what years are suitable and what climate zone. Re table (a) "Engine oil Viscosity Specs" the UK is still the moderate zone no matter what the climate hysterical doomsters say. Also ignore the Artic zone which is probably boiling according to the news!

Fab, I’ve taken piccies of that on my pad, ready to roll out when the discussion starts to get heated over ‘ what oils ‘ as it invariably does. That may indeed take some of the viscious cosity out of the age old arguments. I think Im right in assuming that this was not written recently to boot.
