My gearbox is on its way out and I’m thinking of having it rebuilt as a freeway flyer. My bay is a westfalia 1584cc completely stock. I’m just wondering if anyone else has this set up and whether its even more of a struggle up hills and if the engine just isn’t punchy enough for the gearbox.

By a freeway flyer you mean the 4.57 r&p, or stock 6rib/2lt 091 gearbox ratio? If yes, depends on how much kit you have in your Bus, it might be "interesting" when you aproaching uphills😁
You will need some extra power😉

Aside from any struggle to get up hills, you might find that when cruising the RPM is below the desired amount for maximum cooling from the fan.
There are some calculators on line you can use to work it out but given you are stock in every area that would effect this then I would think it’s not a great idea.

Other more knowledgeable people will be able to give you the definitive answers but I should think a 1776cc would be the minimum you want do that gear ratios your looking at.

Freeway flyer and 6 rib ratios are slightly different. Both have a 4.57 r/p but the 6 rib 4th is fractionally shorter.

The ideal rpm for cooling is 3500rpm and with either 1 of those boxes you'll be doing about 65mph. Why would a 1776 be a minimum?, a healthy 1600 with twin carbs, free flowing exhaust and maybe a mild cam like and Engle W100 or W110. Marcher has a 1641 and a 6 rib and he's bus rips along very nicely.

Yes i know that, thanks for your input anyway.
I asked because many people refers to the 6 rib as the Freeway flyer. I just wanted to know what was the OP refering to.
