Heat shouldn't be needed.Put the drum on some wood to stop it getting damaged. What I find helps to stop you from wacking your fingers is to hold the punch/drift with a pair of mole grips (or get someone else to hold it for you  )
When you put the new races in the drum, don't put the bearings (new or old) on the races and hit them or the races/bearings will be damaged.Find a nice piece of tubing that fits or I usually place the new race where it goes, and put the old race on top upside down and find a socket to fit on and tap it home all the way.
Work the grease right in the new bearing before fitting it.Adjust it and recheck the adjustment after say a week,it may bed in a bit.
