Greeting early bayers  After owning a string of beetles I'm now on the hunt for an early bay and want to ask a few questions -

Fitting Fuchs, what are my options? CSP discs, drilled hubs, adapters...
What are the pros and cons of each method?

Am I right in saying '71 is the first year to come with discs up front? - scratch that, I read the FAQ.

Lowering - are spindles (wagenswest or slammedpanel) the best route?

What years if any came with servo drums?

Cheers.

Welcome aboard, obviously like you say each method has it's pros and cons.

CSP discs are great, will give you a lot of extra stopping power, but are gonna hit you hard in the pocket, and you'll need to get someone to do the conversion if you can't do it yourself.

Adaptors are the easiest method, but will obviously widen your track. you may be able to get around this depending on what offset/width Fuchs you go for.

Drilled hubs would be my prefered method (unless you've got a serious hi-po engine then go for the CSPs). no increase in track, relatively easy and cheap to do.

Yeah, cash is the only downside to CSPs...
Can you get blank hubs to drill 5x130 or will the re-drilled 5x112s be strong enough? Can wide 5 drums be drilled to 5x130 too?

I have a set of Flat4 Fuchs sat here, 2 x 4.5 and 2 x 5.5 both ET45 which is a decent offset I reckon.

I would love to fit a big motor too, -

But it would mean not eating for a few months

You're going to have to show a bit more commitment to the VW cause, not eating isn't really an excuse!!

Welcome to the forum...

;)

LOL, when I said not eating for a few months I forgot to mention "we". How's that for commitment?

Cheers.

So, servo'd drums - will they plant my face on the windscreen if I stamp on the stop pedal?

on top of that you have shipping, and vat

make sure you include them, pluss your gurantee is with a guy 3000miles away

servo'd drums are often better than a 944 disc upgrade, you would be suprised how good they are.

But if it's in the bus before I ship it....

re spindles, slammed panel dont make bay spindles anymore due to ball joint issues. Your best method if you ant to go more than 3" safely is beam conversion with king and link pin like here....

the 71 had one year only calipers/discs but if you can get a set of later spindles with discs they will bolt straight on like i did. I will probably go the above route eventually.

What about wagenswest spindles? I don't want to slam it, just drop it a few inches.

there was a bulk buy of these on here. I think they are still waiting for delivery might be worth waiting and maybe we will see some before and after pics? eh guys?

Hey, Johnnyâ„¢. It's me, JustinOval - I thought as I don't have the ovals anymore I should find a new user name.

This one wasn't the best choice I know, difficulty letting go I suppose?

Later spindles on a 68-70 to fit discs? The only reason I'm holding out for a 71 is the brakes, but if I'm buying dropped spindles this is pointless, yeah?

so will the wagenwest spindles not fit a 71 then??

ive got a 69, and a 71 on its way, but only 1 set of spindles coming

I have a 1969 Westy. It had wide 5 drums fitted, but I swapped the beam out for a 1971 with 5x112 discs. I have a set of adapters which would work fine with various sets of Porsche wheels. It is the easiest & cheapest way to do it. If you sell the van & want to keep your wheels, you can run either 5x112 or 5x130 replacements.

The pads are cheap & parts are easy to get.
