When re-building my Solev 30pict1 carb at the weekend, the first thing i checked was the cut off valve, this wasn't working. Got a new one on order now. Silly question but what does this acutally do and when does it work? Just wondering if this could have been the cause of my fuel leak?

Hiya matt,

The cutoff valve is basically just an electromagnet that controls a plunger. In this respect it is much like a solenoid.

When the plunger is extended (car off no juice to the cutoff valve) it blocks the fuel delivery. As soon as the key is turned the magnet pulls the plunger back allowing fuel to flow inside the carb. This is a pretty simplistic explanation but give the idea.

So..................when you turn the key off after a trip, the plunger hits home, cuts off the fuel, and prevents dieseling (which is why the cutoff valve is there in the first place).

Cheers for that ^^^^^ I wonder if this is the cause of my fuel leak then, as it only seems to leak once it's turned off for a while?

Hiya Matt,

While a fuel leak from the cutoff valve is possible it is far more likely that your leak is from the throttle shaft bushings. Matter of fact, it's been my experience that a leak is more likely caused by a warped carb base than from a leaky cutoff valve, which is another way of saying, "not very likely".

Yer cos its a Solex 30pict1 it doesn't have bush's in the shaft, it thort it did till i took it all apart. So it must just be worn then. Think it's new carb time then
