Hi Guys,

I have a recently aquired '69 Westy import, which has a locking fuel flap but no key.

Luckily it is stuck in the 'unlocked' position so I can fill up (although it swings freely back and forth whilst driving), but would like to be able to use the lock as intended.

I have removed the barrel but there are no numbers or markings on it.

Any ideas where I could get a replacement lock barrel that would fit ? , or if it is possible to get new keys cut for existing barrel ? and any idea what it might cost me ??

maybe you can remove the wafers from the barrel, that should mean "any" key would be able to turn it.

Not much good for security - but presumably you have a locking cap underneath...

This is the blank you would probably need: (it's what my "68 uses, google: JMA UN FS)

Good luck

I'd try rekeying the lock to match your door key. Hope this helps. Let us know how it goes please.

Hi Guys, Sorry for delay in responding, ....today was first opportunity to get to the lock up where the bus is currently stored.

mattp.....here are some pics.....

Were these locking flaps an extra option or aftermarket addition ??? They dont seem to be on many others.

slow-lane-Matt...........As you can see, no locking cap underneath, but i may go with your suggestion of removing the barrel wafers and using a blank key if this is easy enough to do, anyone tried this ??

vwcanuck.......does that mean getting a new barrel made up that my ignition key can operate? how do i do this, or where can I get this done ??

Thanks.

That looks much like a standard barrel lock fitted to most filing cabinets etc, you could probably buy another lock with key for about £3.

Something like

Agreed ^^

There should also be an overcentre spring on the hinge that holds the flap open or shut.

I assumed you had a locking cap inside as you can't lock the flap, and (legally) you gotta have a lock somewhere.
(To prevent some towrag dropping a lit cigarette in for a laugh)

You can't use the same key as per the rest of the car as the key is much shorter and a totally different shape.

I'd also be interested to know why it seems only some buses have locking flaps - doesn't seem to be age related.

Looking at the link on Rlechpa's post above - you should just be able to pull the wafers out to let the barrel rotate with
any key - should be easy enough to do - and be reversible

(Also if you want to swap my locking cap for your non locking cap let me know - mines a pia being "double locked")

The lock on the fuel flap was something some owners added. As already stated, that lock is a filing cabinet lock. I did exactly the same to my bus back in 1973.

There is no legal requirement.

I am no expert on anything and am often wrong, but there are plenty of references on internet stating locking cap is MOT requirement.

Agreed its a requirement now. I don't know what the cut off date is but as far as I am aware, changes made to the MOT over the years have not been retroactive.

Older vehicles are not expected to meet current regs. That doesent mean its not a good idea to fit seatbelts to a 1958 splitty, just that you don't have to.

I think a locking fuel cap is always a good idea and I would recommend. :)

It's not in the MOT test manual as far as I can see :)
