Morning all I wonder if you can help me out
I've been trying to find out what height the fuel pump push rod should be from the pedestal but can't find anything. I'm asking as I'm just getting my recon engine ready to start up to run it in but the pump broke at the bottom I have the 100mm rod so can't understand why. So if anyone has got any idea's that'll be great thank you

Cheers Dan

Oh it's a beetle engine!

Different fuel pumps for alternator and Dynamo require different length rods. You'll need to match the two together . 100mm or 108mm I think?

Hi there
Thanks for your reply, I have the 100mm rod with the alternator pump which is why I'm confused as to why it broke!

Maybe just a worn older pump, or a bad quality repro pump?

If you take a look at the underside of the pump you can see the difference. If your pump suits a 100mm pushrod, the lever at the bottom will be practically flush with the mating surface. If you need a 108mm pushrod, that lever will be about 8mm up into the casing.

My advice- buy both, or buy the 108mm pushrod and if it's too long (check before fitting) grind 8mm off the top.

did you fit the fuel pump pedestal?

So just to clarify I have the 100mm rod with the alternator pump which is now broken does anyone know what height the rod should be measuring from the top of the pedestal? Should it be flush with the pedestal or does the pic I've uploaded look right

Thanks Dan

bloody hell, that went! from the angle, it looks as if that arm is actually poking out from underneath the fuel pump?

Cheers Happystamps,

do they not normally look like that then? I'd say it probably sticks out about 5mm so maybe its not got enough upward travel which is maybe why it broke do you think?

Does my push rod look right then?

Rod looks ok height wise to me?

Get another pump, fit it and turn the engine over by hand before firing it. Im calling a cracked casting on that fuel pump.

I was playing around with a 100mm fuel pump on Sunday and it didn't poke out of the pump itself... Rod looks fine :)
