Hi just bought our first van 69 westy cali import. Drove it back from Kent and i felt really high on petrol fumes when i got back, any tips and advice on what i need to check to sort this out as dont really wanna take the kids in until its sorted.

It seemed to be worse when the "heating" (gentle back of leg warming) was on so kept that off for the most part.

PS I only have very basic knowledge, this is going to be an interesting dive head first into things for me so please be gentle in your reply  Ive read somethings about heat exchangers and fuel breather pipes? fuel pipes are all new last year.

Also the heating was awful, Im not expecting miracles of course, I know they are not renowned for it but any advice on how to improve things would be greatly accepted

Thanks in advance for your help.

Lucy

This may get moved by a mod to the MECH TECH section,

Heat exchangers may be your first port of call

Rear hatch seal is another good thing to look at.

If you really mean petrol fumes then you need to check for petrol leaks. Check the fuel pipes and connections all the way from the bottom of the tank through the pump and up to the carburettor. This is very urgent because petrol leaks can lead to fire. Once you are sure the fuel pipes are correct and safe then investigate the fuel tank breather and the hose connected to the filler neck.

If on the other hand you mean you are getting exhaust fumes in the vehicle then, as Alex suggested already, check your exhaust, heat exchangers and pipe work.

Finally, if the fumes are more oily smelling, then check the engine breather hose from the oil filler to the air cleaner is properly fitted and not blocked.

Hi Lucy

Whereabouts in the country are you as if close enough happy to come and have a look.|

It can be a number of things causing the fumes and as Alex has pointed if the heat exchangers are worn through they can be leaking exhaust gasses into the van, if its just a petrol smell it can as simple as the seal on the fuel cap is perished but it could be breather pipes and fuel intake pipe. Sometimes these things take a while to track down.

Heating is set up correctly should work well and give you more than warm legs, you are aware you can change the heat to come out of the dash by moving the lever on the central column under the dash to the other way?

I'm with graham, I'm always being told how bad the heating is  , but it's only bad if it's either not put together properly, leaking or broken.
