I put a hammer & dolly set from Machine Mart on my birthday list and received two of them, one from my wife and one from my parents. I went to MM to return one and get a refund as both paid cash for them - the guy behind the counter told me that there was a 10% admin fee for returns - WTF???

Rather than the £50 I should have got back I was given £45 - I was told that this was to cover admin fees and re-stocking, but neither my wife or parents were told about this when they bought the items, he pointed to a very vague sign stating that it was company policy and there was nothing he could do about it.

I took my £45 and went home to write a very stern letter to their head office, when I received their reply it basically said 'like it or lump it'. As a long standing customer of theirs I am very disappointed to say the least and will not be spending my hard earned £££'s there in the future.

Be warned - I know it was only a fiver on this occasion but could have been much more costly if I was buying the big compressor I'm after...

I'm boycotting MM and invite you to do the same - I think it's outrageous!!

;)

i know its only a fiver ,but coupled with my tesco five pound off tesco drinks voucher i could have bought a case of stella for nowt ,so i too would have nutted him!!!!!

Thats **** to be honest! MM have always been good to me in the past, but then i have never had to take something back.

It's about knowing your consumer rights, if the items were bought in store and are not faulty then they don't have to accept the goods back at all if they don't want too.

I agree it's a bummer though, a full value credit note would be fairer as a returns policy, assuming you can use the credit note of course. It's not how many high street shops would behave but I guess they are more 'industrial commercial' so aren't necessarily so high street consumer focused.

Bet you'll still give them a look next time you need some cheap tools though ;)

Its a trade thing, i do some buying for the company i work for , its a small family run electrical engineering firm , i reckon about 75% of our suppiers charge us a "HANDLING FEE" to return items ordered by mistake, normally between 5% and 10%.

So the customer has to feel it too? I'm sure that kind of thing can be accounted for in the original cost and P & P.

It may only be 5 sheets but it's the principle. what a load of ******** :(

My mrs bought me a starter pack and said it was a present for me and could she bring it back if it was not the right one?
They took it back no charge good as gold!

What a bunch of T*****s handling charge, never used to have one when i was in the motor trade.

Im still Boycotting COMETS electrical after they sold me somthing crap 5 yrs ago, but thats another story. All those new electrical bits we have bought since me, my family and friends got them elesewhere.

Ill boycott with you, ;)

I just got an invitation to a VAT free evening. Maybe I can save your fiver?

Nutting a shop assistant though? Not good ....
